League of Legends Jungle Guides- Baron, Dragons & More

We continue our foray through the Jungle, focusing on the “big boys and girls” in the Rift: the epic monsters. The Rift Herald, the Dragons and Baron Nashor are some of the most important targets in the game – do you know everything about them?

If you missed our first Jungle , you should quickly reread everything about the camps and plants. But now for the epic monsters: The Rift Herald, Baron Nashor and the Dragons are often referred to as “epic monsters”. They spawn less frequently and teams often fight bitterly over them. Not only do they usually require several people to defeat, but defeating them also gives you a much greater advantage – a buff.

  • Rift Herald: The Scuttler’s bigger and meaner cousin will show up in the Baron’s Pit eight minutes into the game. Fighting him takes a while, as he has very good stamina. His attacks, however, are not too strong either and you can actually dodge them easily. Occasionally, an eye opens on his back where you can do massive damage. When killing the Herald, he drops his “eye”, which a champion from the team can pick up within 20 seconds. With the eye, the champion can recall faster (like the Baron buff) and summon the Herald to fight for his team. Then the Rift Herald charges at the enemy towers and tears them down with ease. This allows your team to gain a lot of gold and thus take the lead. If it is killed before 13:45 minutes, its twin will reappear six minutes later. This one will despawn at minute 19:45 to make room for the Baron, but he can last ten seconds longer if he’s in the middle of a fight.

Dragon: There are actually five types of dragons with different powers that can appear in the Gap – with the first dragon spawning after 5 minutes and then reappearing every five minutes after that. Dragons have quite a bit of HP, good defenses, and are immune to CC. Initially, the dragon can be one of four elemental types: Cloud, Ocean, Hell, and Mountain. All elemental dragons give a permanent buff to the team that kills them. Later dragons deal bonus damage and have more damage resistance from the team.

Dragon spawns have a different pattern in each game: the first three dragons are different, and then all subsequent elemental dragons are the same type as the third until one of the two teams gets a dragon soul. After the second dragon is killed, the map changes depending on what the next dragons will be, turning into a cloud, ocean, hell, or mountain crevice. A cloud rift will have an area where the champions move faster (like the rift scuttler zone), an ocean rift will have more bushes, a hell rift will break through some of the walls, and a mountain rift will have more walls. The first team to reach four dragon buffs will unlock the powerful “soul” buff, which is often game-changing. Unlike previous Dragon buffs, only one team can have the “Soul Buff”. Here’s a brief overview of the dragons and the buffs they award:

One of the most sought-after buffs is that of the Infernal Dragon.
  • A Cloud Dragon has a high single target damage. Killing a Cloud Dragon gives the team +10% cooldown reduction to their Ulti, which can exceed the regular 40% CDR cap. The Cloud Soul gives the team a permanent 10% bonus to run speed, which is increased to 50% for 6 seconds after casting an Ulti.
  • An ocean dragon has slowing attacks. Killing it gives the team extra health and mana regeneration. An Ocean Soul lets the team gain extra health (scaling with bonus AD, AP, and bonus health) and mana for 4 seconds after dealing damage to an enemy.
  • A Hell Dragon has area damage. When it is killed, the team gains 4% more AD and AP per stack for all champions. The Hellish Soul causes attacks and damage dealing abilities to deal additional area damage with a small cooldown.
  • A Mountain Dragon is particularly resilient and has powerful but slow attacks. Killing it gives the team 6% more armor and magic resistance per stack. A Mountain Soul gives all team members a shield that scales with bonus health, AD and AP bonuses and returns after the champion has not been attacked for 5 seconds.
  • After either team scores a soul, the Ancestor Dragon spawns. This one is even stronger, but if you kill it, the team gets the dragon’s aspect. Unlike other dragon buffs, it is temporary and lost upon death, but is extremely powerful. All attack abilities deal extra damage, and enemy champions that fall below 20% of their maximum health when attacked are killed instantly.
  • Baron Nashor: The legendary monster spawns in the pit on the upper side of the river when you reach 20 minutes in the game. Slaying it is one of the big goals in the mid-game. The Baron has a lot of health, good resistances, immunity to all forms of CC except stasis and multiple special attacks. Killing him gives 300 gold to everyone on the team, and all living team members get extra AD and AP, faster recalls, and an aura that boosts nearby minions. This buff, often referred to as the “Baron Buff” for short, lasts for 180 seconds, but is lost immediately if the champion is killed. The Baron spawns after 20 minutes and then spawns every six minutes after being killed.
