Teamfight Tactics, the game from the Auto Chess genre by Riot Games, is gaining more and more popularity. But what makes the game special, how does it work, and what is the best way to learn TFT? We will explain this and much more in this series.
Starting a new game like TFT can quickly become demotivating. Others may have been playing for weeks or even months and now you’re supposed to compete with them? Quite unfair at first glance and where is the best place to start? How do you learn the game? With us, from Earlygame, of course! Did you miss the first part of the series and are completely new to the TFT universe? Then you’d better catch up right away. Here you will find everything about the basics, Little Legends, gold and items:
Following on directly from the first part, here we go. Shall we?
The Champions
Let’s get to the most essential part of TFT. What are champions? Your Little Legend doesn’t fight itself, but uses champions from League of Legends. They are the units that fight for your victory on the chessboard every round. There are different types, which can be divided into Tank, Damage Dealer and Support. But these are only the theoretical functions. Each champion in Teamfight Tactics belongs to two subclasses. If you have several champions on the field with the same affiliations, you get bonuses that strengthen them in combat. Besides, each champion has values, so-called stats, and an individual ability that is strengthened with increasing level or through items.
- The subclasses. Hover your mouse over them to see what bonuses you can get
- The stars of the champion
- The Stats. Champions deal magic or physical damage and have different defensive stats against them.
- The ability of the champion. Mouse over it to see what it does.
- Life and Mana. Life is probably self-explanatory. Mana is what your champions need to use their ability.
- The item slots. You can equip your champions with up to 3 items. Choose wisely!
- The animal and gold cost of the champion
Tiers, levels and stars
Teamfight Tactics divides the champions into Tiers and Stars. Tier 1-5 represent the rarity and speciality of the champions. Tier 1 is the first and Tier 5 the rarest. The gold cost of the champions corresponds to their tier.
Depending on the level of your Little Legend, you have a different chance of getting champions of the different tiers. As the level increases, so does the chance of getting the higher tiers. Here is an overview for you.
This much we anticipate the later guides: there are tactics that target lower Tiers, or the high ones. A low tier does not automatically mean that the champion is weak. If the champion is level 3, i.e. has 3 stars, you have not only given your companion a fancy golden armor, but the stats are also greatly increased. How do you get a champion to level 3? You have to buy him 9 times. Once you’ve done that, your opponent can expect a lot of lives paired with strong abilities.
- 3x 1 star = 2 star champion
- 3x 2 Star = 3 Star Champion
Hach, a board full of 3 stars, the dream of every TFT player.
The Interface
Here we give you a short overview of the interface in Teamfight Tactics.
- You! Or rather, your Little Legend.
- Your side of the chessboard. This is where you can set up your champions in a tactically smart way.
- Your bench. Here you can store champions that you might need later. You can also sell them at any time.
- Your actions. Here you can buy champions, “roll” them to get a new selection of champions, or increase your level.
- Here you can see all the bonuses of the subclasses and how many champions you have with each one on the field.
- Your item bank. Here you can see all your items and components. Drag them on top of each other to see what they add up to.
- Your gold supply in increments of 10. You can also see this for each opponent – so you can keep track of who is saving or investing all their gold.
- Your opponents and you. Here you can see who has how much life and where you stand.
- The game history shows you exactly who you have already played against and when the next PvE or carousel round is coming up.
- The clock. It tells you how long you have to make your strategic decisions and when the next round is.
- The opponent’s playfield. Keep a close eye on him. What kind of champions is he targeting, how much gold does he have, and what items has he built?
That was already the second part of the guide series. We hope you were able to get some important information about Teamfight Tacitcs. What else you need to know to play TFT successfully, you will learn in the next part. There we will explain everything about the game phases. In addition, we will go a little deeper into the matter and explain to you how to deal with items in the most sensible way, when to combine them and why the decision has a strong influence on the course of the game.
