With up to over 150 champions, there are several ways to put together your team in League of Legends. However, you should not leave the team composition to chance, because a team must meet some criteria to work.
In our first guide to the right team composition in LoL we talked about the right champion choice. Here we will talk more about the team level. Every team has different possibilities to win the game. That’s why you have to adjust your playstyle every match.
By default, every team needs:
- A frontline that disrupts the opponent’s backline and brings CC.
- A backline that represents the team’s damage
- Supports that either try to support the frontline or protect the backline.
There are a few team archetypes, each requiring its own strategy and special champions. Here are a few examples of popular team comps:
1. wombo combo
Aka Team Fight Combo. Super popular in solo Q or low elo games. This team relies on lots of CC, AoE spells that do decent damage and good Engage tools. Easy to execute because it’s all about teamfighting.
Malphite Top, Wukong Jungle, Viktor Mid and Miss Fortune/Leona Bot would be a classic example of a wombo combo team.
2nd Pick
The pick or catch team combo, tries to pick out individual opponents, and kill them. Try to avoid 5v5 teamfights. Champions that should fit into this team comp need mobility, CC, burst damage and/or a long range.
A pick comp might look like the following: Maokai Top, Skarner Jungle, Ahri Middle, and Ashe/Thresh Bot.
3. poke
Poke or Siege teams try to slowly but surely drain the opponents from a safe distance. Poke plays similar to Pick, with the difference that you don’t necessarily kill the opponents before starting a teamfight. Damage at long range, disengage and accuracy are extremely important here.
Jayce Top, Gragas Jungle, Ziggs Mid and Ezreal/Karma Bot would be a good poke combo.
4 Protect
Protect or Hyper Carry compositions are all about protecting a champion that has enough damage to dismantle the entire enemy team. Most of the time, absolute late-game ADCs are the core of such a combo. The rest of the team is just there to protect the carry.
Mostly Carries like Jinx, Vayne or Kog’Maw are in the center. You can complement it with something like Poppy Top, Nunu Jungle, Cassiopeia Center and Lulu or Janna Support.
5. split push
Split Push or 1-3-1 or 1-4 teams have at least one champion in the team who is extremely strong in 1v1. This champion is sent to a side lane with teleport and should force the opponents to react. The rest of the team should have good disengage to not get 5v4 engaged.
Jax or Fiora Top, Gragas Jungle, Ahri Mid, and Tristana/Janna Bot could send their toplaner to splitpush and still not have to worry about a teamfight thanks to their disengage.
Improvise
This is all well and good in theory, but in the game you will rarely draft a team that is perfectly suited for one of these playstyles. But even if you have one or two champions, that doesn’t mean you suddenly have to throw your whole gameplan overboard. Try to identify where your strengths lie before the game.
Brevity is the spice of life:
- Wombo Combo: Force 5v5 teamfights and completely destroy opponents.
- Protect: Draw the game as long as possible and protect one or two champions.
- Pick: Build up a lot of vision control and catch opponents one by one.
- Splitpush: Split the opponents team and force them to make bad decisions.
- Poke: Poke opponents from a distance until they can no longer defend an objective.
