In League of Legends, there is a saying that games are won and lost in the champ select. While that’s not the whole truth, it is true that a good draft makes winning a lot easier. Here are a few basics to keep in mind for a good team composition.
Quick disclaimer: this guide is more of a guideline than a set of rules. A mediocre champion that you are good at is always better than a good champion that you are pathetically bad at.
Optimally, your whole team picked champions that work well together. Will never happen to you in solo Q, but you yourself can always try to improve your team comp. When you go into the cue as a team, you have more options available to you.
Not every team is the same, but there are a few things that absolutely every team comp does well. During the pick and ban phase, pay attention to what your allies and opponents are picking for champions and adjust accordingly. Here are a few tips on what every team should have:
1. lane priority.
Even if you picked a late-game team, you should have at least one lane that is stronger than your opponent. If you have losing lanes everywhere, you deprive yourself of the possibility to get dragons, towers and other objectives. A good match-up is enough to keep half of the map open for you.
2. frontliner
Whether for tower dives or teamfights, one or two tanks are always nice to have. They give the Mages and ADCs enough space to position themselves properly and make it hard for the opponent to take out the important targets. Most of the time tanks are played as toplane, jungle or support.
3. crowd control
Killing opponents is a lot easier when they can’t fight back. Whether in teamfights or ganks, having CC on your team can never hurt. Basically, champions have crowd control in all lanes, but supports, junglers, and toplaners often provide the most CC.
4. damage
There are two ways to do damage: Burst Damage and Constant Damage. Midlane Mages and Assassins are more likely to be burst champions, ADCs for constant damage. Also make sure to have AD AND AP damage, otherwise enemies can easily stack armor or MR.
5. carry protection
The enemies you try to kill will try to do the same to you. That’s why it’s important to have someone to protect your carries, aka the people doing damage. Some midlaners have tools to protect themselves, but most of the time it’s the support’s job to keep others alive.
6. wave clear
If you need to defend your base or want to get into the enemies’ camp quickly, you need someone who can clear the minions as fast as possible. Here, you can actually pick a champion on every lane that can fulfill this role. Most of the time, however, it’s midlane and ADC, since they need the farm anyway.
