You’ve seen this cute little Yordle all over the LCK as well as the LPL and LEC? Now you want to try your luck at maneuvering this cutie through Summoner’s Rift? Don’t worry, we have just the guide for you. You may not be Nuguri or Zeus, but with a little help and practice, you can master him.
He dominates the current meta… Yes, Gnar is always a good pick in League of Legends thanks to his mobility and adaptable gameplay. He has a unique playstyle and will spice up any LoL match.
Thanks to this guide, you don’t even need the latest of the new in gaming setups like a new screen – even if they help, because every pixel could be an opponent…. Your skill, with these tips, will make you a Gnar main.
Gnar Guide: Summoner Spells
We recommend Flash and Teleport as Summoner Spells. Why? Well, even though Gnar is quite safe thanks to his E, he can sometimes play a bit too aggressively and for those cases, we suggest Flash. Always play it safe, because Mini-Gnar is a bit squishy, especially in the early game.
Teleport is the go-to summoner spell for any top laner. It allows them to get to any teamfight on time or just quickly back to the lane after a back – so no farm is lost.
Gnar Guide: Runes
For Gnar’s runes, choose Resolve as the main rune path and Domination as the secondary rune path.
In the image above we have shown how to set up the runes to work best on Gnar. Also, take the runes Attack Speed and Adaptive Force for your offensive add-on runes and Armor for your Flex.
In Mini-Gnar form, you want to poke as much as you can and do as much damage as you can, with attack speed and Domination runes coming into play. His Q is the attack Gnar uses to poke opponents, slowly winning the lane.
His Mega Gnar form is his tank version and will be the all-in engagement for fights, which is why the Resolve runes that give him extra health, as well as some defensive stats, are important. And of course, Demolish is useful for taking towers and plates, so you’ll get the extra gold and thus slowly get the upper hand on your opponent.
Gnar Guide: Skill Builds
As mentioned above, Q is Gnar’s most important ability. He does damage with it, since his W is just a passive ability that runs all the time. His E is simply a jump. So take Q first and maximize it as fast as possible to deal as much damage and poke the opponent out of the lane.
Once the laning phase is over, it’s time for the crucial team fights. Here it is important to keep an eye on your Rage Bar, as it will decide the fight. When you see that you are about to go into Mega-Gnar form, use his Mega-Gnar-E to jump on the opponent and then push him against a wall with his Ulti. If this combo is successful, all your Backline Carry has to do is shoot free and you’ve won the fight.
Gnar Guide: Item Builds
Starting items are usually the same for all top laners. Opt for either Doran’s Blade or Doran’s Shield, depending on what you feel more comfortable with. For more security, choose the Shield, but if +man can play aggressively, go with the Blade.
For Boots, you should choose either Plated Steelcaps or Mercury’s Treads, depending on your lane opponent. If it’s an AD champion, go for the Steelcaps, and if your opponent deals magic damage, go for Mercury’s Treads. It’s all match-up dependent.
Now for the good parts. The best Mythic item to build on Gnar is Stridebreaker. The extra attack speed makes his auto attacks more nasty and lets him deal more damage to fill up his Rage Bar. Not to mention the Ability Haste that Stridebreaker gives. Because if you ever miss your Boomerang, you’ll have no chance to somehow poke your opponent for ages otherwise.
The next items are usually Sterak’s Gage for the extra shielding as well as Dead Man’s Plate to keep you safe in team fights thanks to the extra armor. It really doesn’t matter in what order you buy these two items, but they are part of the core build.
What champions should you play Gnar against?
Gnar is great against melee top layers, especially in the beginning. Champions like Urgot and Cho’Gath will have a hard time with these mobile Yordle – with his hop, he’s easily out of range of their attacks.
On the other hand, matchups against other mobile champions like Riven or Irelia will be quite difficult, as they can easily escape Gnar’s attacks.
