League of Legends may be a 5v5 game, but only one team can win in Rift – and no one says you have to give your opponents a fair fight. Ganks are an important part of any League player’s arsenal. So here come some tips to make yours better!

Ganking – moving to another lane to help your teammates there – has been around forever, practically since lanes have existed in MOBAs. When done right, ganking can help your team gain an advantage on a lane and get that much closer to winning the game. Both junglers and laners can make ganks to help their teammates.

Calculate Victory Rate

Where you should gank usually depends on the state of the map, but you can often spot opportunities right from the loading screen. If your team has good CC and damage while the enemies have poor escapes, this is a lane to keep an eye on. At the same time, it’s important to keep in mind what you can do with a lane advantage. In a Vladimir vs Yasuo or Vayne vs Draven lane, any advantage can be crucial. But in an Ornn vs Malphite lane, the two champions are very even, even if you’re behind in gold.

But there’s more to winning a lane than just deciding which one to focus on. When you gank, you have to spend time and you might lose something else on the map – like a Blue Buff – and that’s why the gank has to be profitable. If your teammates are low on HP or an enemy Minion-wave is pressing, your teammate may not be able to help you or may be too late. Also, there are other factors. Are the enemies unprotected? Can your opponents capture a Neutral target – like a Dragon or the Rift Herald – while you’re on another lane? You will rarely have a perfect opportunity, but you should gank if you are reasonably sure it will be a win for you.

Perform the deed

As a rule of thumb, you want to have a vision advantage for a gank. The later the enemy sees you, the less opportunity they have to react. Ideally, you want to jump completely out of the dark onto your opponent. Your teammates can help you by removing enemy Wards in important places like the lane bushes, the pixel brush.

Champions who have invisibility or the ability to jump through walls have more opportunities to get into position. Sometimes, however, if the enemy is unprotected, it’s okay to even gank through a Ward if it’s near the Lane. In this case, you should attack first and then slowly take out the enemy’s vision once the gank has been gained.

The execution of the gank itself depends mostly on practice and coordination. It is important to make sure that all immobilizing CC abilities are used in succession to keep the opponent out of action for longer, and to take into account any escape abilities. Kills aren’t the only thing you can get out of a gank, however.

Summoner Spells of the enemy can be used, or forcing a bad recall for the enemy, or even just enabling good recall timing for your team can be worthwhile resources. Even preventing the success of an enemy gank can be a good investment. You have to build on your success. After a successful gank, don’t forget to return to that lane. If you have killed the opponent or made him use Summoner Spell, he will be much more vulnerable. Repeated ganks can increase your advantage and help you completely dominate your opponents.
