Kungen was the most famous player in WoW – What became of him and his guild Nihilum? – eSportsNews eSports WoW Classic

Veterans of #WorldofWarcaft should still be names #Nihilum and #Kungen. The famous warrior and his guild were among the first greats in the #MMORPG. Then they suddenly disappeared from the scene. What are the former “stars” doing today?

Who are Kungen and Nihilum?

Swede Thomas Bengtsson “Kungen” Amèdèo was considered the best warrior in the world during vanilla WoW and the first expansion #BurningCrusade. He wrote some of the first and best class guides.

His knowledge of the game and his class was legendary. Even developers were amazed at one time or another by Kungen’s deep expertise. Trivia: By the way, his name means “The King” in Swedish.

The warrior even got his own card in the trading card game: Kungen the Thunderer:

Who is Nihilum?

Kungen entered the raids of World of Warcraft with the guild he founded, Nihilum. Raids, or raids, are the “royal class” of PvE in the game. Here, up to 40 players (at the time) compete against the toughest bosses for the best loot.

Nihilum was the first top guild in the world. They can record “First Kills” on the final boss of Naxxramas, Kel’thuzad, as well as the old god C’Thun from Ahn’Qiraj. It took them 113 days to kill C’Thun, but they were still the first.

Since then, they’ve been in and out of contention for the World First Kills race, at least until 2016, when Nihilum announced they were calling it quits and no longer participating in the big raid events.

Kungen turned his back on WoW for a while, even playing the now-dead Wildstar for a while. However, he returned with the release of WoW Classic 2019. The plan was apparently to return permanently, but nothing came of it.

Nihilum suspends raid operations, Kungen plays New World

Here’s how it went with Kungen:

After the guild’s withdrawal in 2016, the Warrior King fired up his Twitch stream every now and then. However, he was so irregularly present here that there was never a breakthrough. Sometimes he hasn’t been on the air for a whole year.

Yet he certainly had potential. With roughly 2,000 viewers on average and up to 14,000 at peak, he would have had at least a good chance at a top position on Twitch. His fame obviously gave him an advantage for his streaming reach.

When he streamed, he showed different games like World of Warcraft, Path of Exile, Fallout or older RPGs and had about the same amount of success with all of them. Actually, the ideal conditions for a variety streamer.

On YouTube, Kungen was also somewhat active on and off and was still uploading videos here until 2020. He has started projects such as the attempt to lay bosses in WoW Classic only with “green” equipment and without the otherwise so important buffs. Up to the famous Ragnaros in Molten Core, this even worked:

Kungen himself said on Twitter 2018 that an illness has been plaguing him for a long time. He also has a bipolar disorder, as he says himself (via Twitter). In his statement, he implies that these diseases stand in the way of a “stable life and stream”.

For many former pro gamers, Twitch is often their next stop. xQc and shroud, for example, also come from e-sports backgrounds and previously played Overwatch or Counter-Strike. Both have shown an affinity for Twitch and leveraged their notoriety.

What is Kungen doing today?

On his Twitter channel he kept giving updates about what he’s up to. For example, at the end of 2021, he revealed that he was looking at the remaster of Diablo II. He’s also taken a shine to the new MMORPG, New World.

His latest message came on Twitter in January 2022, in which Kungen shares that New World is slowly becoming World of Warcraft through certain updates. His character profile reveals that he has at least played Shadowlands, though apparently not too actively.

By the way, we requested an interview with Kungen, but have not received a response yet.

What happened to Nihilum?

Parts of the guild merged earlier with Ensidia, another well-known raid guild. However, in 2010, many important members left the guild after there was a ban penalty for the exploit on the famous Lich King.

Kungen turned Nihilum into a kind of e-sports clan back in 2015. He teamed up with Polish website Kinguin and gathered some of the best Hearthstone players in the world – including German Adian “Lifecoach” Koy.

Lifecoach in particular took a first place with Nihilum in some Hearthstone tournaments, however the clan’s career did not last long.

Both Kungen and his guild and organization disappeared from the scene around 2016. Public appearances and status messages on social media were almost nonexistent. Nihilum eventually faded into the sand and is now something else entirely.

WoW guild becomes Polish e-sports clan

What is Nihilum doing today?

The original website of the guild still exists. However, it now redirects to the Polish e-sports clan Devils One. The clan originally emerged from Team Kinguin, which is probably also the connection to Nihilum.

Devils One have teams for Fortnite (incorrectly listed as Rainbow Six: Siege), of Legends, and the racing sim DV1 TRITON Racing, according to their website. The clan used to be active in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as well.

At least in LoL, the team is still active even today. In 2019, they managed to secure first place in the Polish Ultraliga, against Rogue’s Academy team, of all teams. Since then, the successes have been rather moderate and there has been a lot of fluctuation in the squad, but Devils One still participates in tournaments.

Is Nihilum still raiding?

Since 2016, Nihilum has only been at the top of the global rankings once: in Warlords of Draenor. There they reached world rank 21 in Blackrock Foundry and as high as rank 15 in Citadel.

After that, it became less so, even though Nihilum continued to raid for a long time. In fact, the guild was active until Battle for Azeroth, the addon before the current Shadowlands. According to wowprogress, Nihilum still defeated N’zoth, the final boss in Ny’alotha.

However, the squad didn’t try their hand at either heroic or mythic mode. They put all the bosses only on “normal” and they didn’t even visit the raids of Shadowlands – at least not as a guild.

However, there is a successor guild called “Nihilum Reborn”. At least in the first Shadowlands raid, Castle Nathria, they did 9 out of 10 bosses on heroic, with Kungen as tank. Since then, however, nothing has been seen here either.

It is possible that the guild will return once again after a break. Here, however, we can only speculate. Shadowlands disappointed and drove away many players despite its strong start. Perhaps the next addon will provide new enthusiasm for Nihilum and other veterans.
