Korean delivers scathing verdict on Perkz

In , South Korea the : all teams from Europe and the USA have already been eliminated. Korean Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong (22) is now passing harsh judgment on the best player in Europe, Croatian Luka “Perkz” Perković (23): He says Western players don’t really care about the laning phase and aren’t good at it either.

This is the situation:

  • At LoL Worlds 2021, 3 teams from the US and 3 teams from Europe competed. 4 were eliminated in the group stage, the other two tore it up in the quarterfinals without a chance against South Korean teams.
  • The Croatian Perkz is considered the best player in Europe, but moved to the USA before the – Season : Cloud9 was the last hope of a team in the West to get anything at all at the Worlds.
  • But Cloud9 lost in the quarterfinals without a chance to Gen G., a South Korean team that is considered rather conservative and boring. They lack the stars of T1 (Faker) or DWG KIA (Showmaker). The midlaner of the South Koreans, Bdd, now passes a harsh judgement on Perkz.

“Western players don’t really care about the laning phase”

This is what Bdd says about Perkz: Speaking to Korean site Inven, Bdd is asked what he has to say about the match-up against Perkz:

One thing I learned at LoL Worlds 2021 is: western midlaners don’t really care about laning, and they’re not very good at it either. So things went exactly as I expected them to.

BDD

How did things go? In the match-up against Perkz, Bdd played champions Aatrox (2 kills 2 deaths 4 assists), Syndra (1-1-15) and Zoe (1-3-13). It is noticeable that as a midlaner he collected mostly assists for his team. The kills were achieved by the jungler, top laner or botlaner, depending on the match.

Perkz played Yasuo (5-4-2), Sylas (4-6-0), and Syndra (0-2-5) in the series. The couldn’t really make an impact on the match.

Before the match, Perkz had still referred to Faker: He could beat BDD. But it was not so.

Do others see it that way too? Yes, it seems to be a common opinion among Koreans that Western players are just not good at laning.

For example, the top laner of DWG KIA, Khan, said that Western players are not really strong in laning, so his midlaner Showmaker could even use the “Predator” rune, which makes the laning phase harder but makes group play easier.

Khan says Showmaker was sure he would win his lane anyway in the battle against the MAD Lions in the quarterfinals.

On reddit it is believed that Bdd’s judgement comes from the fact that western teams already emphasize team play and roaming in the laning phase and give up lane dominance for it.

Showmaker is currently considered the best player in the world, he is midlaner.

What is the laning phase? The “laning phase” is the first 15 minutes or so of a LoL game, where players stay relatively fixed in their positions and try to take out as many Minions as possible, earning experience points and gold.

In this phase, discipline and mechanical skills are most important – in later phases of the match, tactics, strategy, and group battles become more important.

Korea clearly dominates LoL Worlds 2021

What has changed there? In the past, the West teams like G2 were known for playing relatively chaotic and aggressive in the laning phase, but thus upsetting opponents. Then in the group combat phase, the team’s strong and creative team play stood out. Disadvantages from the laning phase could be compensated by outstanding actions and good nerves.

Teams from China, on the other hand, were considered strong and biting in the laning phase: they looked for small advantages to “snowball”, i.e., to build on. Chinese LoL often looked like a wild brawl in the laning phase.

The teams from South Korea were considered “too passive” and “too staid” “in their weak phase.” Their methodical play didn’t really bear fruit in earlier metas, but had trouble against the “open-mouth” tactics of China or the chaotic creative play of the top Western team, G2. When their game did work, they were said to “slowly strangle” their opponents.

However, at the current LoL Worlds 2021, the Koreans are superior with their style of play. Currently, 3 of the remaining 4 teams are from South Korea.

What could be the reasons? There’s a lot of catcalling on reddit right now. The European fans name several reasons why the West is so weak right now:

  • One says that the good players from Europe are now scattered on 2 continents.
  • Another says that whoever loses his lane too often in China or Korea is exchanged for a younger pro – this pressure is missing in the West.
  • A third mentions the “SoloQ” gap: Koreans and Chinese could practice laning in their home SoloQ against strong opponents – in the West they could not. The level would be too weak for that. Western players would have to go to a boot camp in South Korea to find strong training partners.
