In League of Legends, the South Korean Park “Summit” Woo-tae (23) was voted the best player in the US league LCS. But two weeks later, the top laner leaves his team Cloud9 already. He was only there for 6 months. No one really understands why he’s leaving – but somehow it just didn’t fit. While the regular – Season was fantastic, the playoffs turned out to be a disaster for Cloud9.
Which player are we talking about?
- Toplaner Summit was only known to hardcore LoL fans in the West before 2021. He played for South Korean LoL teams like SanBox Gaming, which are not as in the spotlight as the internationally known Korean teams T1 or DAMWON Gaming.
- As part of a “Korea” experiment, Summit ended up with Cloud9, who went full “Korea” with a new coach and conquered the US league with an innovative, somewhat crazy style. There was already talk of Cloud9 becoming the LCK’s outpost in the US.
- Summit was voted the league’s best player after the regular – Season , he was Cloud 9’s “win condition” and seemed superior to all other top laners in the US. Spectators raved about what a spectacle Summit pulled off with heroes like Gnar, Camille, and Tryndamere.
There are also great stories about League of Legends e-sports in Germany:
Cloud9 was super in the regular – Season with Summit as the “win condition”.
Here’s how the regular – Season went: A rift appeared early on in Cloud9: Coach LS, who was supposed to manage the Koreans and is considered a revolutionary thinker in LoL, left early without quite knowing what went wrong.
Even without the mastermind LS, however, Cloud9 continued to look like a favorite for the championship. While things didn’t go as brilliantly at the end of the – Season as they did at the start, they finished in 2nd place after the regular – Season with a 13-5 record. Mainly because of Summit, who was subsequently crowned “Most Valuable Player of the USA”, MVP.
Cloud9 totally goes down in the playoffs because everyone just picks on Summit
That’s what went wrong: But Cloud9’s weaknesses became clear in the playoffs. Because Summit was actually Cloud9’s “only win condition”.
It was enough for opposing teams in the playoffs to focus fully on toplaner Summit and take him out of the game early to put Cloud9 out of action. Playoff opponents 100 Thieves and Evil Geniuses launch multiple ganks into the top lane early in their games to keep Summit down.
Summit, the team’s strength in the regular – Season , now proved to be an Achilles heel. In the playoffs, Cloud 9 flew out 0-3 and 0-3 without winning a single game.
LoL: Team surprisingly fires its successful and brilliant coach – “Shocked and confused”.
Summit leaves Cloud9 – team promises to explain more later
This is the result now: Cloud9 announced that Summit is leaving the team after only 6 months. This happens not even 2 weeks after he was voted the most valuable player in the USA.
Midlaner Fudge will move back to the top lane. There is talk that Jensen, who was discarded by Team Liquid, will move to Cloud9 and move to the middle.
The Korean thanks the team for welcoming him so well. He specifically thanks Cloud9’s management for taking care of him, even “after we ended the contract.”
Exactly why the Summit experiment ended so abruptly after half a year is not known. It sounds like both sides agree with the solution now, though.
From Cloud9, it almost sounds like they know how disappointed fans are and promise “later explanations”.
Fans don’t seem disappointed with Summit’s performance, but with the fact that the Korean only wore their colors for 6 months. He had simply been an exciting player, whether things went well or not.
Cloud9 is a bit of an enigma at the moment. The departure of the star coach also fascinates League of Legends fans:
1.1 million people watch a video on the subject, which puzzles the whole of LoL
