In our Interview with Blizzard from May 2021 Lead Producer Holly Longdale and Production Director Patrick Dawson famously confirmed, “The team plans to address the topic of WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Classic when TBC Classic is successfully implemented, and then the community will decide whether we will travel to Northrend on the progressive realms. The Developer poll from March 2022 shows that we are currently in the middle of the evaluation phase.

WotLK Classic will come, for sure

But let’s not kid ourselves, the latest poll is unlikely to be more than a token action. There will most certainly be a re-release for the second WoW expansion. Firstly, because WotLK represents the absolute peak of WoW history in terms of pure subscription numbers. At its peak, more than twelve million people transferred around 13 euros a month to California. Some publishers might even forego all microtransactions for figures like that.

On the other hand, various surveys from the past few years showed that Wrath of the Lich King is also very popular with the WoW community in retrospect. In our survey from February 2021 WotLK even came in first place by a wide margin.. And also one year later the community ranking looked comparablealthough this time in video form.

Highlight features of WotLK at launch

The only question is in which form the second WoW expansion will end up on the Classic live servers. After all, Burning Crusade Classic has shown that Blizzard has definitely moved away from the inflexible #nochanges stance to #somechanges by now. Let’s take a look at the launch features of the Northrend adventure first, because they will surely be available from day 1:

• Maximum level increase from 70 to 80
• Death knight as a new class, including a new starting experience
• Northrend with ten zones and Dalaran as flying capital
• 12 dungeons
• Naxxramas, Eye of Eternity, Obsidian Sanctum and Archavon’s Chamber as entry-level raids
• PvP Battleground Beach of the Ancients
• Arenas in Orgrimmar and Dalaran
• The new profession of epigraphy and the associated introduction of glyphs.
• Extension of the known talent trees
• Introduction of the achievements
• The Barber allows you to make character adjustments for the first time in the game
• The port of Stormwind begins its work, there are new zeppelin towers at the gates of Orgrimmar and Undercity
• Hit chance, critical hit chance and speed now equally affect melee attacks and spells
• Spell power now affects spell damage and healing

These big features of WotLK came only after the launch

Let’s now take a look at the core features of WotLK that were implemented via patches after launch. These should, similar to WoW (buy now ) Classic and TBC Classic, land on the live servers via different content phases.

• Argent Tournament has started (Patch 3.1)
• The Nobel Garden World Event is significantly expanded and adjusted
• PvP Battleground Island of Conquest (Patch 3.2)
• Raid Instance Trial of the Crusader and Dungeon Trial of the Champion (Patch 3.2)
• Reissue of Onyxia’s Hoard for 10- and 25-player raids (Patch 3.2.2)
• 3 New Dungeons in the Frozen Halls of Icecrown Citadel (Patch 3.3)
• Icecrown Citadel Raid (Patch 3.3)
• The Ruby Sanctum (Patch 3.3.5)
• Permanent expansion of Archavon’s Chamber
