Jota wins ePremier League Invitational

The ePremier Invitational featured 20 teams from England’s top league in an online 20 tournament, with proceeds going to charity. Wolves attacker Diogo Jota was the overall winner, beating Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in the final.

The biggest soccer league in the world is moving online…. For now.

Wolverhampton Wanderers star Diogo Jota has been crowned the first winner of the ePremier League invitational tournament.

The 23-year-old beat Liverpool defender Trent Alexander Arnold with a golden goal in the final after the two drew 1-1 in their virtual 90-minute match.

It was Alexander-Arnold who had taken the lead in the final just before halftime after a dramatic golden-goal win in the semifinals over Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling in the quarterfinals.

It looked as if the Liverpool man would walk away with a surprise victory until Jota equalized in the 76th minute to force a second game to determine the winner.

The Portuguese winger prevailed in that duel after a tense game between two excellent FIFA 20 players. However, a 67th-minute goal from Raul Jimenez secured the trophy for Jota.

The Wolves man had already beaten Burnley’s Dwight McNeil 4-1 in the semi-finals that day, having earlier eliminated Sheffield United’s Lys Mousset and Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi.

As part of the ePremier League Invitational, all 20 clubs in the First Division provided a player to represent their sports team, with 18 of those nominated being professional players. Only Manchester United and Arsenal submitted a team without an representative.

All proceeds from the online tournament will be donated to the playersTogether initiative – a charity set up by Premier League players to generate funds for the UK’s National Health Service.
