Jeweler recreates legendary Frostmourne

A runic blade of your own. This dream came true for a jeweler who recreated the legendary blade Frostmourne from .

If World of Warcraft has one thing, it’s pretty passionate fans. It gets especially interesting when these fans also have extraordinary talents or practice an exciting craft. Because then the fans can express their love for the game through unique projects and create unique items that only they own.

That’s what a jewelry maker from Vienna, Febo from the goldsmiths’ manufactory Avalone, thought. He devoted a hell of a lot of time to a project to create the legendary Warcraft weapon Frostmourne – out of gold and silver. The result is a piece of jewelry unlike any other in the world.

What is Frostmourne? While there are numerous named weapons throughout the Warcraft cosmos, none is as famous yet infamous as Frostmourne. Known as “Frostmourne” in the original, it is a rune blade that Prince Arthas obtains during the Warcraft III campaign in Northrend. Although the weapon gives him extreme power, with which he tries to save his kingdom, it also corrupts the user.

Frostmourne is capable of devouring the souls of victims and subsequently resurrecting the fallen as undead servants. Few weapons in the history of are as well known as the Runeblade of Arthas, the Lich King.

How much work goes into it? “Enormous amount” might be an understatement. Many, many days went into the Frostmourne jewelry project. Febo himself gives some key data in his video:

  • More than 700 hours of work
  • 38 days of filming
  • 124 individual elements, which are then fused into 43 different components

How much does the sword cost? Those hoping to buy the Rune Blade as a perfect piece of jewelry must be put off. Because the sword is not for sale, but was a passion project of Febo. When asked how much it would cost, he only replied that it would probably be “very expensive” – no wonder, given the skill and the numerous hours of work that went into this Frostmourne project.

Frostmourne is based on Warcraft III: Reforged: At the end of his video, Febo goes on to explain why he actually did the whole thing. He has played and loved the Warcraft games for many years. His final design is based on the Frostmourne from Warcraft III: Reforged. To that end, he explains:

Because Frostmourne has been in the Warcraft story since 2004 and in different games with different renderings, I had to decide which design to use. I chose the design from Warcraft III: Reforged – and I know everyone hates Reforged – but to me that’s still the best version of Frostmourne and it definitely has the most detail. And I like details.

An impressive piece of craftsmanship that also shows for once how much work and detail actually goes into making jewelry.

Definitely no comparison to the 3-second casts of a jeweler in World of Warcraft.

Meanwhile, Warcraft III: Reforged is “really okay” by the way – after 31 months, the game is complete.
