Is Xbox Exclusivity a Wise Move for Profitability?

In a message to Brazilian regulators, Microsoft once again pointed out that the company has no interest in publishing “” only in the Xbox ecosystem in the future. According to the Redmond software giant, such a move would simply not be profitable.

At the beginning of the year, Microsoft announced its intention to take over the US publishing giant Activision Blizzard at a price of almost 69 billion US dollars. An announcement that also drew the attention of Brazilian regulators, who gave various publishers the opportunity to present their side of the story.

After Sony pointed out a few days ago that the “Call of Duty” series was so popular that it could influence the choice when buying a console, Microsoft once again assured Brazilian regulators that the Redmond company has no interest in publishing the “Call of Duty” series exclusively in the Xbox ecosystem.

In particular, the fact that PlayStation’s entire strategy over the years has focused on exclusivity ensures that it would simply not be profitable for Microsoft to pull the “Call of Duty” brand from PlayStation systems.

PlayStation user loyalty highlighted

According to Microsoft, such a move would only be worthwhile if Activision Blizzard’s games ensured that a sufficiently high number of male or female gamers switched to the Xbox ecosystem and ensured correspondingly high software sales. In addition, a scenario in which Microsoft pulls “Call of Duty” from the PlayStation systems would, according to the Redmond company, contradict its own plan to focus on the players and communities.

Further complicating matters is the fact that “PlayStation systems have had the most loyal users for generations” and that, based on developments in recent years, there is no evidence that this has changed. As a result, Microsoft believes that PlayStation consoles will continue to be an incredibly important factor in the video game industry, and thus an important sales market for major series such as “Call of Duty”.
