In Pokémon GO, trainers have been demanding a way to communicate with each other in-game for years. Now, after an innovation, players have renewed hope that a long-awaited in-game chat could soon become a reality. We at MeinMMO explain to you what happened.
What function is it about? In Pokémon GO, trainers can make friends with each other and thus fight together, swap or send each other gifts. However, communication is not possible via the game.
This missing function has been the subject of criticism from many trainers for a very long time. After all, it is helpful to communicate before raids or level ups. But this is currently only possible via other external platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook or Discord.
That’s why the demand for an in-game chat is getting louder among many trainers. Now, however, there are new hopes that this could also soon become a reality. We explain to you why.
This is why trainers have hope again for in-game chat
As trainer SambucaSebi shows in his reddit post, Niantic has given its other augmented reality game Ingress Prime a new feature. Under “Niantic Social”, players have been able to write to each other and make arrangements there for a few days.
As StevensDs, another reddit user, explains in the comments, this chat is similar to how Discord works and is pretty easy to use. And the trainer JGCInt also goes into a bit more detail about the chat function in his comment.
Yes, and you can create communities within the game (you don’t need external apps) and some other things. That’s pretty cool. Oh, and also you can contact your PoGo/Pikmin friends when they are available to chat. So you can coordinate swap actions/friend ups.
Will there soon be in-game chat in Pokémon GO?
So now that Ingress Prime has gotten an in-game chat, many trainers have hope that it will soon be applied in Pokémon GO. Thus, comments on this news can be found in the social networks, such as that of Heavy-Background-217.
He writes under the post, “Wait, we can use it to send messages to people in the game?! Ahhhh, I can’t wait for Niantic Social to come to PoGo” (via reddit.com).
But how likely is this scenario?
In principle, the implementation of an in-game chat after the release in Ingress Prime is conceivable. After all, Niantic itself hinted last year that it was working on a chat solution for Pokémon GO to replace external apps and simplify in-game dating.
So that would suggest that it could be coming soon to Pokémon GO as well.
That speaks against an in-game chat: However, the protection of players, especially the protection of children and minors, also plays a decisive role, which is why Niantic would have to take appropriate precautions here. And some trainers are also critical of Nintendo’s right to have a say.
Thus, the following comments can be found on reddit :
- Kel-nage: “Hmmm… I don’t want to be a killjoy, but I’m really not sure if this will ever come to PoGO. Ingress is obviously Niantic’s IP – so they have a lot of flexibility there. The owners of PoGO and Pikmin’s IP have been very reluctant to add broad, unrestricted social features to their games – so I’m not sure if this will be made compatible with all of their games”
- ArcanineFan01: “Yeah, it’s unlikely Nintendo would let that happen (they own a third of the Pokemon company and own Pikmin). They’re pretty staunchly against messaging services after the 3DS services were abused.”
- Duarjo: “I’m glad to hear that the likelihood is very low that Nintendo will allow this service in a game associated with its brand… I would hate to see what happens to an in-game chat”
So whether Pokémon GO might actually feature in-game chat in the future remains to be seen. Should there be any further information from Niantic, you will of course find out here on MeinMMO.
What do you think about the implementation of a chat function in Ingress? Would you also like to see this in Pokémon GO? Or are you more concerned that a chat would only lead to problems among the players? Feel free to write us your opinion here on MeinMMO in the comments.
By the way, Niantic is currently working on an update of the Mega developments. A find now shows a new Mega feature, which many trainers have been wishing for forever. We show you which one it is.
