The release of “Starcraft 2” was several years ago, but “Starcraft 3” is still a long time coming. Whether a third part will ever be released is written in the stars. We have found some reasons that speak for and against a successor.
Pro: “Starcraft 3” could come – but only with a completely new storyline
Fans would probably play “Starcraft 3” mainly because of the multiplayer mode. However, it is a good tradition that strategy games from Blizzard also offer a first-class story. However, it might not be that easy to provide “Starcraft 3” with an exciting story. At least a continuation of the story from “Starcraft 2” is unlikely, since it is largely finished.

We don’t see much room for a sequel. The most we could imagine is a fresh story with new main characters. And maybe even a fourth playable species besides Protoss, Zerg and Terrans?
Cons: “Starcraft 3” is not coming because competitive real-time strategy is dead
RTS (“real-time strategy”) games used to be a mainstay in esports alongside first-person shooters, but today they take place in a niche in most parts of the world. In South Korea, “Starcraft 2” is still a big deal and occasionally larger tournaments like the WCS Global Finals are held with prize money up to $500,000. Compared to the million-dollar prize pools in “Dota 2,” “League of Legends” or “Fortnite,” however, this is hardly worth mentioning.
A quick glance at Twitch reveals that RTS titles have long since been replaced in popularity by battle royales and MOBAs. “Starcraft 2 hardly attracts any audience in front of the screens on Twitch: Less than 2,000 viewers are not exactly exhilarating for an Esport title. A few more people watch larger tournaments, but the glory days seem to be over.
Could Blizzard revive the genre with Starcraft 3? Unlikely. If the developer wants to make another attempt at reviving the genre, the much-anticipated “Warcraft 4” would probably be a better choice among fans.
Pro: “Starcraft 3” is coming – but as a stealth shooter or MMO
If “Starcraft 3” were to actually appear, it wouldn’t necessarily have to be a strategy game. As already mentioned, real-time strategy games are as good as dead in esports. Even away from virtual competition, they are weakening. There are a few current gems here and there like “Frostpunk”, “Anno 1800” or “Into the Breach”, but good strategy games that focus on fighting are rather niche titles.
That’s a good reason to move “Starcraft” into a different genre. Blizzard had already tried this in 2003 with “Starcraft: Ghost” – a stealth shooter in which players were supposed to take on the role of a Ghost special forces unit from “Starcraft”. However, the game was put on hold indefinitely in 2006. In 2014 came the official confirmation that work had ceased.
Allegedly, a second “Starcraft” shooter with the codename “Ares” was still in development for two years. However, Blizzard also cancelled it in 2019. However, it is not impossible that an attempt with a “Starcraft 3” shooter will bear fruit at some point.
Cons: “Starcraft 3” will not be released (for now) because Blizzard doesn’t have time
Blizzard has always been one of those developers who take their time with development. In return, however, there is little to complain about in the games when they are released. There were twelve years between “Diablo 2” and “Diablo 3”, seven years between “Warcraft 2” and “Warcraft 3” and eleven years between “Starcraft” and “Starcraft 2”
“Diablo 4” and “Overwatch 2” are currently more important to Blizzard than “Starcraft 3.”

In the meantime, Blizzard has grown considerably as a company, but with “World of Warcraft”, “Hearthstone” and “Overwatch”, it also has more titles in its repertoire that want to be maintained. Therefore, this time it could take much longer than eleven years until “Starcraft 3” is released.
We’ll probably be lucky if it comes out before 2030 – if at all. First up are “Diablo 4” and “Overwatch 2” anyway. And “Warcraft 4” is still at the top of the wish list for fans.
Pro: “Starcraft 3” could come, but must become less complex
Anyone who plays or watches RTS games knows that things can get very hectic. The economy has to run, units have to be produced, armies controlled and battles fought at strategically important positions. In short: In “Starcraft 2” there is always something to do at every corner.
In Starcraft 2, units are scurrying around everywhere, making it hard to keep track of them all.
While an average “Starcraft 2” player is simply trying to assemble a powerful army, the game is even more complex for experienced players and professionals: scouting enemy bases, keeping timings and time windows for certain tactics, rescuing injured units from battle – all things beginners don’t think about, but which later determine victory and defeat.
“Starcraft 2” is extremely difficult to learn, and playing the game reasonably well takes a lot of effort. Even South Korean professional gamers think that “Starcraft 2” is too complex in some areas. So if Blizzard really wants to appeal to mainstream gamers as well as pros with “Starcraft 3,” many mechanics will have to be simplified. Whether the game will then still be well received by the pros, however, is questionable.
