In the MMORPG World of Warcraft, the final boss of the Sunwell raid came out in 2008: Kil’jaeden, an important figure in the history of WoW. At that time, it took 62 days for the first guild to defeat him. In 2022, Kil’jaeden returned as the final boss in WoW Classic. After 52 minutes, he was dead. But that’s not just because players are much better today – no, Blizzard also resorted to tricks back then.
How was WoW back then?
- The raid “Sunwell” was a strange story in WoW back then. Because actually, with the death of Illidan Stormrage on June 5, 2007 by the legendary guild Nihilum, the expansion “The Burning Crusade” already felt finished and WoW fell into a sleep.
- But Blizzard brought with “Fury of the Sunwell”, on March 25, 2008, then still a major update, so as not to leave fans a year and a half without new content, until “Wrath of the Lich King” would be released in November 2008.
- The “Sunwell Plateau” brought hard enemies in the raid, also the last 3 bosses were “timegated”, so you couldn’t get to the bosses right away:
The history of WoW was also marked by bugs:
Timegates made bosses last more than 2 months in 2008
How did bosses die back then? The bosses of the raid lasted a long time back then (via method.gg):
- the raid opened on March 25th and the first 3 bosses died relatively fast: Kalecgos, Brutallus and Felmyst were killed within 2 days after the raid opened.
- the “Eredar Twins” didn’t arrive until April 8 and died on April 10.
- the Boss M’Uru came on April 29 and died on May 4 – so he lasted quite a while.
- the boss Kil’jaeden only came on March 20, 2008 and died on May 25.
So from the start of the raid to its end, Kil’jaeden lasted 62 days and provided variety. You can watch the kill from that time in the video (via YouTube).

Chinese guild runs through raid in 52 minutes in WoW Classic
This is how it is in 2022:
- These days, the “Sunwell Plateau” came to WoW Classic: This was on Friday the 13th, in May 2022.
- The Chinese guild “Old school Cn” ran through the raid in 52 minutes – 51 minutes and 5 seconds to be exact
- 5 minutes later the next guild was through, 10 minutes later the third.
Compared to the past, the reaction to a World First today is sober:
What is the commentary on this? It’s already being viewed with a lot of mockery. On reddit, people are making fun of the fact that Kil’jaeden, a powerful “demon lord of the Burning Legion”, slayer of a thousand worlds, only lasts for such a short time.
They then blaspheme: it’s because he has no legs in this version – everyone knows that only the legs make Kil’jaeden really powerful.
Kil’jaeden came back to WoW 9 years after Sunwell and delivered another strong fight. It took Method 655 attempts to defeat him in 2017.
There used to be more tinsel after all
That’s what’s behind it: The example of Kil’jaeden blatantly shows that a WoW Classic does not bring back the full experience of yore.
The game and the players have changed a lot:
- For one thing, it lacks “the atmosphere of yesteryear,” the tricks the developers used to delay the raid.
- Of course, today the bosses no longer offer surprises, no one has to learn the fights
- On the other hand, the games today are much better organized and trained than before.
The bitter realization then players grasped early:
WoW Classic is much easier than many players thought
