Seth ‘Scump’ Abner is a pro player of Call of Duty: Warzone. He, too, realizes that the shooter franchise is currently in crisis. But the early leaks and rumors surrounding Modern Warfare 2 give him hope.
Since the first rumors about CoD: Modern Warfare 2, info has been circulating around the game that it will get a new game mode called “DMZ”. Trustworthy leakers like Tom Henderson keep saying that DMZ will be strongly inspired by games like Escape from Tarkov. The idea that such a game mode could appear in CoD also gives CoD pro Seth ‘Scump’ Abner great hope. He believes that DMZ in the form can save Call of Duty.
CoD pro is excited about the idea, but “doesn’t want to get his hopes up too high”
What is the leaked mode? If DMZ is really reminiscent of Escape from Tarkov, it means that a mode that looks like this could be playable in CoD soon:
- You assemble a loadout in advance from items you’ve already gotten.
- You then search for further loot in the matches.
- Finally, try to get out of the map in one piece with this loot.
- With a combination of PvP and PvE, real players and AI opponents try to prevent you from doing so.
- Loot that you have successfully taken with you can be used in the next match.
- However, if you die in a match, you lose (almost) everything you took with you.
What does the pro say? CoD pro Scump thinks the idea that soon the latest Call of Duty could be playable like this is incredibly good. In the podcast from his Esport team OpTic, he can hardly keep himself on the chair with anticipation.
He also keeps saying that he “doesn’t want to get his hopes up too high,” but that’s hard to believe in the face of some of the statements. Here is a small selection:
- “If they do this right, it could save CoD. If they do this right… oh my god. Escape From Tarkov, CoD style, with skins… ooooh!”
- “If it’s a game like Escape From Tarkov… These games are addictive! You just have to try to find a balance of killing people and taking the good stuff from them. It’s a great feeling.”
- “Killing opponents who have better loot, stealing a million dollars from them. It’s so exciting. It’s so much fun.”
He doubts, however, that it will be an exact copy to Tarkov. Instead, he and his interlocutors suspect it will be a faster version of the hit shooter from Russia. After all, Tarkov is an extremely realistic military simulation – CoD will cater more to casual gamers, the pros suspect.
Gameplay from Escape from Tarkov is a new shooter trend
This game principle is increasingly becoming a new trend in the shooter world. The German shooter hopeful The Cycle: Frontier, for example, follows this trend and wants to pick up casual gamers. Another shooter hit from Germany, Hunt: Showdown, also follows this game principle and is unspeakably fun for some MeinMMO colleagues: I played over 700 hours of Hunt: Showdown in 2021, so you should too.
So the fact that CoD might try its hand at this trend wouldn’t be a surprise. But EA’s big shooter competitor has also tried its hand at it. With the “Hazard Zone” mode, Battlefield 2042 wanted to make its own version of Tarkov – and failed completely.
If CoD actually follows suit, it will be exciting to see how much success they will have with it. There are also some leaks about CoD Warzone 2. These might even reveal what the map for the DMZ game mode might look like. And some map classics have been leaked: Leaks on CoD Warzone 2 reveal old favorite maps and new loadout mechanics.
