LoL Guide 2021 – Champions, Masteries, Items and more – With 16 tips you will become better in Ranked
League of Legends is a wide-ranging game with many elements that need to be considered for a successful Ranked. In our detailed LoL Guide 2021 we try to give you some tips and tricks as detailed as possible. Our LoL Guide consists of three parts. First we will go into the champ select. Then we give you tips for your laning phase and last but not least some hints for the later gameplay, the late game. If you follow our LoL Guide 2021, you will conquer the Ranked Ladder in League of Legends in no time.
LoL Guide 2021: Champ Select – Counter Pick or Comfort Pick? This is how you should decide
The year is 2021 and Riot Games has released an incredible 155 champions in League of Legends. No:e normal player:in has the time to master all champions equally well, which is why you earn some main champions and thus acquire a champion pool. But is this always the best choice? In our LoL Guide we have the answer for you.
In a nutshell, you should stay in your champion pool. We will try to explain this with an example. Let’s say you are Midlane Main and your opponent picks Kassadin, one of the best scaling champions in League of Legends. To prevent Kassadin from single-handedly carriening the late game, you need to stop him early in the game.
Good counters for this are AD assassins like Zed or Talon. This is proven by sites like counterstats.com which show the pick- and wInrate of the respective countermatchups. So should you rather choose one of the two counterpicks to win the lane? This is only true if you have experience with these champions. If Zed and Talon are not in your champion pool, you should not force the counter pick to Kassadin at all costs. As a Zed beginner you have no chance against an experienced Kassadin player in LoL. He knows how to survive the early game with his main against you as a newbie to control the game in the late game. Therefore, we recommend you to stick to your comfort picks in our LoL Guide 2021.
Assasins (Talon, Zed, Katarina) | Tanks (Cho Gath, Garen, Mundo) |
Control Mage (Xerath, Azir, Vel Koz) | Assassins (Talon, Zed, Katarina) |
Tank (Cho Gath, Garen, Mundo) | Percentage Damage (Kindred, Trundle, Vayne) |
Poke (Ezreal, Brand, Varus) | Engage (Nautilus, Thresh, Blitzcrank) |
Powerfarmer in the Jungle (Ivern, Master Yi, Shyvanna) | Active Gankers (Lee Sin, Nunu, Warwick) |
LoL Guide 2021: Champ Select – Always pick the main or for the team?
Another piece of advice from our LoL Guide 2021 that goes in a similar vein is whether you should pick for yourself or for your team? This is a point that very few League of Legends players:inside, especially in the low Elo, care about. Most of them prefer their own main or counter pick.
However, in Champ Select you should pay attention to whether your main even fits into the team comp. For example, if your team has only picked tanks, you should definitely take care of the damage. The same applies if you have only Squishys in your team so far. In this case, if your role allows it, you should pick a robust tank. But how should you react if this does not correspond to your champion pool and mains?
We have an answer for this case as well in our LoL Guide 2021. You simply have to adjust your champion pool. It is true that onetricking, i.e. permanently playing a single champion, lets you generate Elo. However, this is usually not enough to reach the high realms of LoL Ranked. A balanced champion pool, which allows you to adapt to the respective situation in the champ select, will be worth its weight in gold for you in the Ranked.
LoL Guide 2021: Champ Select – The efficient banishing of enemy champions.
The first thing you do in Champ Select is banish a champion from your opponents. Most players already have the champion they want to banish ready before Champ Select. But this is also a mistake, which we try to get rid of with our LoL Guide 2021. After all, flexibility is the be-all and end-all in League of Legends.
If you are in the Champ Select of LoL, you should first wait and see what your teammates ban. Riot Games doesn’t force you to ban a champion as soon as possible, but gives you thirty seconds to make that decision for a reason. It could be that your teammates want to ban the same champion as you do.
Almost every LoL player has a champion they just don’t like to play. However, blanket banning that champion in every game is not the wisest decision. When banning a champion, you should pay attention to how often the champion is played in the current patch. On sites like champion.gg, for example, you can track which champions are picked most often in the current patch and what their ban rate is.
LoL Guide 2021: Champ Select – Customize Masteries to your Matchup
A small but nevertheless crucial piece of advice that we don’t want to keep from you in our LoL Guide 2021 is to customize your masteries according to the specific matchup. By this we don’t just mean choosing between armor or magic resistance, but also your keystone mastery can depend on the matchup. Most champions in LoL also work with more than one mastery. For example, if you can make longer trades on the top lane, Conqueror would be more profitable than Grasp of the Undying.
LoL Guide 2021: Champ Select – Should you dodge a Ranked?
The final tip we give you for Champ Select in our LoL Guide 2021 is the answer to the question, should you dodge matches or not? Is the opposing team comp better, does your support pick Teemo or are you autofilled? There are many factors that can put you at a disadvantage in LoL before you even start ranking.
By dodging you lose de facto time, but you save yourself a nerve-racking Ranked, which you could lose at a higher probability due to the mentioned factors. We therefore clearly recommend dodging, but you should not use it too often. Riot Games has increased the penalties for dodging games in 2021. If you dodge three times within 24 hours, you will not only receive -10 LP, but also a ban of 12 hours. This is a penalty you should not take under any circumstances.
1 Dodge within 24 hours | 6 minutes penalty and -3 LP |
2 Dodges within 24 hours | 30 minutes penalty time and -10 LP |
3 Dodges within 24 hours | 12 hours penalty time and -10 LP |
LoL Guide 2021: Laning Phase – Slowpush to harass the opponent.
Let’s move on to the next segment in our LoL Guide 2021, the Laning Phase. In your Laning Phase, your Minions are a crucial factor that many players:inside neglect. Whether a trade goes your way or not, especially at the beginning of the LoL game, depends on your Minions, which can cause a lot of damage to you or, in the best case, to your opponent.
A good way to have enough Minions on your side for trades is a slowpush. To do this, push only three caster minions and lasthit the rest. This way a big Minionwave will build up. Now you can go on your laning phase for trades. The Minion Damage is almost negated by the almost non-existent enemy Minions. Your opponent, on the other hand, will take quite a bit of damage with them. Trades in the early game have a significant impact on the rest of your laning phase.
- Slowpush on a normal Wave: Kill the three Caster Minions as fast as possible. Only lasthitten the rest.
- Slowpush on a Canon Minion Wave: Kill the three Caster Minions and the Canon Minion as fast as possible. Only lasthit the rest.
- Slowpush on a Sidelane with no opponents: A slowpush is also a good way to remove a player from the opposing team from the group. To do this, go to a sidelane. Kill the three Caster Minions and if necessary the Canon Minion. Do not lasthitten the rest. There will be a huge Minionwave piled up for the opponents, which either needs to be defended or will earn you a Turret.
LoL Guide 2021: Laning Phase – Keep an eye on your opponent’s cooldown
Another deficit, which we want to address in our LoL Guide 2021, is the Lasthitten. Often, the respect for the opponent’s laner is too great, and one forgoes CS. However, this does not necessarily have to be the case. When you are poked on the lane, you should definitely keep an eye on your opponent’s cooldowns.
Assuming that your opponent, who is harassing you on the lane, uses his complete combo, you can take some CS. Keep in mind that your opponent only has his autoattacks ready, and you have all your abilities. To create this situation often, you should try to pretend that you are taking a load hit. It’s better to forgo a CS and dodge an ability, and then you can take multiple Minions.
- Scenario 1: The opponent has just used all his spells to either clear the minions or poke you. Now you can trade back.
- Scenario 2: The opponent used a spell to clear the Minions a few seconds ago. Be careful, you might lose a longer trade once his cooldowns expire.
- Scenario 3: The opponent has not used any spells for a long time. Be patient and wait for the opponent to use his spells. Then make a trade.
LoL Guide 2021: Laning Phase – How to avoid the Jungle dif
“Jungle Dif” is probably one of the most famous sayings in all of League of Legends. However, in our LoL Guide 2021 we have a tip ready, through which you never have to post this claim in the chat again. In most cases, the laners themselves determine whether the jungler can actually carrien the game.
Ideally, you start with a Ward on one of the enemy buffs to find out where the enemy Jungler starts. If you spot the jungler on the minimap, there are two possibilities. Either it is topside or botside. If the jungler is near your lane, you should avoid all-ins at all costs. A Pinkward can also work wonders in LoL. The investment of 75 gold is worth it, since you won’t give the enemy jungler 300 gold by dying.
LoL Guide 2021: Laning Phase – The Importance of Resetting
Coming to the last tip of the Laning Phase in our LoL Guide 2021, the Laning Phase is often about finding the right time to reset. Keep an eye on the backport timing of your opponent. If he retreats to Base, you should push the Wave as fast as possible with your abilities. This will cause your opponent to lose some gold and experience. Also, the Minionwave will be in a good position for you again as soon as you return to the lane.
LoL players:inside often make the mistake of making their backport dependent on the next item and their gold. However, often in Ranked you get backports without consequences, moments when you neither have a large number of Minions on your side of the lane nor lose experience. In these cases, you should reset. Otherwise, your opponent will be ahead of you in items. You, on the other hand, are forced to stay on the lane, not until you have enough gold for your items, but until your opponent allows you to.
- Step 1: Accumulate enough gold until you can afford a complete item or part of an item. Another reason would be that your mana is about to run out.
- Step 2: Push the Minion Wave as fast as you can. Feel free to use abilities here, your mana regenerates in Base anyway. Ideally, push the Wave that comes before the Canon Minion Wave.
- Step 3: Don’t waste time and go back to the base immediately. Many players waste their time here by giving a few more autoattacks on the tower. If there is no plate for you to get, you should backport as soon as possible. Every additional second on the lane will cost you CS.
- Step 4: Buy items and return to the lane!
LoL Guide 2021: Late Game – What are the most important objectives?
Let’s move on to the last big segment in our LoL Guide 2021, the Late Game. A big point of disagreement, especially in low Elo ranges, is the prioritization of Objectives. LoL gives you Tower, Inhibs, Drakes, Herald and Baron to choose from. Especially the latter is often ignored by LoL players.
When faced with a choice between one or two Turrets and the Baron in your Ranked, always choose the Baron. You usually get the Turrets with the Baron buff anyway. Going it alone is taboo here. The decision must be made as a team. As a jungler you always have the biggest influence on the prioritization of the objectives. We have listed all the objectives and their effects for you.
Cloud Dragon (Soul) | You get 10% run speed which is increased by 50% for the next 6 seconds after you use your ult |
Mountain Dragon | +6 armor and magic resistance |
Mountain Dragon (Soul) | You get a shield depending on your AP, AD and life if you had no damage for 5 seconds |
Sea Dragon | Restore 2.5% of missing life every 5 seconds |
Sea Dragon (Soul) | You restore life and mana depending on your AD, AP and life value over 4 seconds after dealing damage to an enemy. |
Hell Dragon | + 4 attack damage and ability damage |
Hell Dragon (Soul) | Damaging faägifkeiten and attacks trigger an explosion on enemies that deals adaptive damage equal to your AD, AP and life. |
Ancestor Dragon | When you deal damage to enemies with less than 20% life, they receive 100% of their maximum life as absolute damage |
Baron | Faster Backport, Boosts minions and grants increased attack and faction damage. |
LoL Guide 2021: Late Game – Going Alone Will Lose You LP and Elo
Solo plays are what League of Legends is largely about. However, you only win games as a team, and the Late Game makes that clear. In the later stages of the game, you should avoid soloing at all costs. The reason for this is the high death timer, which is underestimated by some players. A death in the late game can result in the loss of objectives like Baron, or even the game. Ask yourself the question if you win as a united team. If the answer is yes, then you should not split push or farm Jungle Camps. Take this wisdom from our LoL Guide 2021 with you and make it clear to your teammates in the late game. We have summarized all death timers up to level 18 for you.
1 | 6 seconds + Additional seconds depending on game duration |

LoL Guide 2021: Late Game – On which lane should you group?
Once the Midlane Inhibitor is destroyed, some LoL players don’t seem to know where to group. We have the answer in our LoL Guide 2021. Most LoL players make the mistake and continue to group in the middle. Finishing the game is usually impossible and the advantage of the destroyed inhibitor is wasted. A simple clue is the spawn time of the Drake and Baron. Depending on which objective appears first, you group on the botlane or toplane. We have listed more late game scenarios for you.
Mid-Inhib down. Baron and Drake not up | Botlane or Toplane |
Mid-Inhib down, Baron not up, Drake up | Botlane |
Mid-Inhib down, Baron up, Drake not up | Toplane |
Top Inhib down, Baron and Drake not up | Midlane or Botlane |
Top Inhib down, Baron not up, Drake up | Botlane |
Top inhib down, baron up, drake not up | Midlane |
Bot-Inhib down. Baron and Drake not up | Midlane or Toplane |
Bot-Inhib down, Baron not up, Drake up | Midlane |
Bot inhib down, baron up, drake not up | Toplane |
LoL Guide 2021: Late Game – Flash suddenly has a completely different weighting
Let’s move on to the last item in our big LoL Guide 2021, where we will focus on the by far most popular Summoner Spell Flash (Blitz). It is used by LoL players both passively and aggressively. However, you should think twice about the latter in the late game.
In the late game, flash (lightning) is usually the only escape tool for the ADC and midlaner. This should not be carelessly wasted on a kill. This is not to say that you should not use your flash aggressively. However, the kill you get from it must give your team at least one larger objective, such as a Baron, Drake, or Inhibitor.
We hope we could give you some helpful tips and tricks with our LoL Guide 2021.
