Those responsible at Activision Blizzard have published the first financial report after the launch of Diablo Immortal. Could the mobile MMO already catapult player and revenue figures to unimagined heights? And what about upcoming projects like Diablo 4?
Since the ongoing takeover by Microsoft, those responsible at Activision Blizzard have dispensed with the long customary “conference call”, but there was still an informative financial report for the second quarter of 2022 recently. It is particularly interesting to see how the launch of Diablo Immortal affected the player and revenue figures. In the following, we have summarized the most important information for you.

Blizzard’s Downfall | How a Company Dismantles Itself in a Few Years
Insights around the Blizzard universes
- Even though Diablo Immortal was only released in June (the last month of the quarter), the mobile MMO has a significant impact on at least one figure in the report. Blizzard, for instance, was able to increase the number of monthly active players from 22 to 27 million. More than half (!) of the players of Diablo Immortal are said to have held a Blizzard game in their hands for the first time ever.
- Also otherwise one seems to be content with Diablo Immortal. The high ratings in the mobile app stores (the criticism on other platforms and websites is kept quiet) and the high positions in the download charts of more than 100 countries are highlighted.
- Diablo 4 is still scheduled for release in 2023 for PC and consoles. The hack&slay is said to support cross-play and cross-progression across all platforms. Furthermore, the “live service” character of the game is emphasized. They want to expand Diablo 4 with new content over many years.
- With WotLK Classic, WoW: Dragonflight and Overwatch 2, several important releases are planned for this year. To meet the expectations of the players, the developer resources have been significantly increased, especially in the WoW area.
- Public testing for the mobile game Warcraft: Arclight Rumble is underway for several regions.
- Despite Diablo Immortal and a good quarter from Hearthstone, revenue and profit are lower than in Q2 of last year ($401 million versus $401 million in revenue). WoW performs about significantly worse in comparison, but that’s no surprise. Burning Crusade Classic was released in the corresponding quarter of last year.
How else is Activision Blizzard doing?
- The number of developers was increased by 25 percent compared to last year. An important factor for this was of course the acquisition of Proletariat in June 2022.
- Net revenues of $1.64 billion were significantly lower than the $2.3 billion reported in the second quarter of 2021.
- The main reasons for this are the weak results from the “Call of Duty” front (even though it was possible to increase the figures compared to the 1st quarter) as well as the current product cycle at Blizzard (many important releases are still to come).
- Compared to Q1 2022, the number of monthly active players has dropped from 100 million to 94 million.
- Activision Blizzard has high hopes for the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in October and the launch of Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 later in 2022.
- King’s (Candy Crush) games generated more revenue and profit year-over-year. However, the number of monthly players dropped from 250 million to 240 million in comparison.
