Viktor Reznov (Russian: Виктор Reznov) is a Russian Red Army squad leader in Call of Duty: World at War during World War II. He also plays a major role in Call of Duty: Black Ops, either as an assistant or part of the Studies and Observation Group. Besides, he also appears in Black Ops 2.
Backstory
Reznov was born in Russia in Saint Petersburg (renamed Petrograd in 1914 and Leningrad ten years later) and joined the Red Army sometime before World War II. According to Reznov, his father was a musician who played music by patriotic composers with his violin during the siege of Stalingrad. His music was a symbol of hope for his countrymen and defiance for the Germans. His father had his throat cut by a German while he slept. This is one of the many reasons why Reznov hates the Nazis.
Battle of Stalingrad
In Mission Vendetta, he is a sniper trying to assassinate German General Heinrich Amsel, the “architect of Stalingrad’s misery.” One of only two survivors of a brutal massacre at a well, he survives by faking his death. This is where he and Dimitri Petrenko first met. Reznov explains his situation to Dimitri. Reznov, who can no longer hunt because of his injured hand, gives Petrenko his sniper version of the Mosin Nagant rifle and asks him to eliminate the general. . He leads him through Stalingrad, where they face a battle against a German sniper and an entire German platoon with several of 35’s flamethrowers equipped soldiers.
Then they are rescued by Petrenko’s squad leader, Daletski. They help these and his men capture the German communications post. After fierce fighting, Petrenko kills Heinrich Amsel. They are attacked, German tanks and soldiers approach. Reznov kills numerous German soldiers before jumping into a canal, whereupon Dimitri followed him. It is important to note that due to Reznov’s injured finger, he can no longer fire his gun accurately, which is why his “character class” was changed to SMG-Gunner and is armed with a PPSh-41. He is seen again three years later without his fingers.
After the war
After the war Reznov and Petrenko with some other Russian soldiers have to capture the German scientist Steiner at the Arctic Circle. The latter was to show Kravtchenko and Dragovich the Nova-6 gas, which was in a frozen ship. But Reznov and the other soldiers were ambushed. Dragovich tests the gas on Petrenko and Reznov is forced to watch as Petrenko dies a gruesome death. The corpses of Nova-6 victims have strong external resemblance to zombies (gray, dry skin etc.) After that Reznov has to fight his way out of the ship with some other Russians.
Shortly after he escaped, he was arrested and taken to the Workuta labor camp. He stayed there until 1963, when the detainees launched a large-scale breakout. During this breakout Reznov died. It is not known when he died. Mason sees Reznov in front of him every time..
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
In Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Reznov comes back again and forces Mason to shoot Lev Kravchenko in the mission “Old Wounds”. Later, Mason again sees a mirage of Reznov, who gives him water, allowing him to survive. Probably it was another person again, or Mason imagined it all.
