Sergeant Thomas Sullivan was an American troop leader of the USMC in World War 2 who appears in Call of Duty: World at War.
Biography
Thomas Sullivan was the leader of the Marine Raiders who came to Makin Atoll at the beginning of the game to rescue Private Miller from the hands of the Japanese. After Roebuck stabs Miller’s tormentor in the back with a knife, Sullivan strangles the Japanese officer and gives Miller the officer’s nambu to attack the Japanese base. After freeing one more squad, they were able to repel two Japanese raids and leave the island alive.
At the end of the raid, Miller’s life is saved one more time by Sullivan when Miller is paralyzed by an explosion and a Japanese man rushes him with a katana. Sullivan shoots the Japanese man and pulls Miller into the lifeboat. Two years later, Roebuck, Miller and Sullivan are part of the 1st Marine Division, commanding a host of recruits, including Private Polonsky. The trio was known to the recruits as “old dogs,” although none of the three were over 20. Sullivan’s squad is to attack Peleliu Island, but their attack backfires when they are pinned down on the beach by Japanese machine guns until Miller requests a missile strike on the beach.
The troops make it to an Allied landing site, however Sullivan is about to open a locked door when he hears a Japanese man screaming behind it. At that exact moment, the Japanese suicide bomber charges through the door and pierces Sullivan’s stomach with his katana before being shot. Despite the troopers’ best efforts, Sullivan dies of his injuries shortly thereafter. According to Roebuck, the entire squad was shocked and frustrated by Sullivan’s death, Roebuck especially. He calls Sullivan the most solid, dependable, and courageous Marine the world has ever seen.
Polonsky is also affected by Sullivan’s death and still remarks “I was sure Sullivan would make it.” Sullivan’s body is sent back home to his family and Roebuck takes his place as sergeant.
