John “Soap” MacTavish is a character from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. He serves in Task Force 141 until his death in Prague, Czech Republic.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Soap started his career in the British Special Air Service just hours before the outbreak of the second Russian Civil War, undergoing only a quick training, as a result of which he is introduced to Captain Price and the rest of the Bravo team. On his first mission, he is tasked with infiltrating an Estonian transport ship, where he and his team, led by Price, discover nuclear bombs being taken to Russia. When the team is interrupted by enemy MiGs, Soap is forced to jump from the ship onto the team’s helicopter when it had already begun to take off. However, he slips and is rescued by Price at the last moment.
Soap, Price and Gaz then fly to the Caucasus to get Nikolai, who had informed them about the transport ship as an informant, out of the area. They are successfully able to locate and retrieve Nikolai, but their helicopter is hit by a Russian anti-aircraft missile, after which they have to fight their way through enemy lines until they finally get air support from an AC-130H Spectre with the call sign “Wildfire” and are able to be taken out of the area by helicopters.
On Soap’s next mission with Bravo Team, he finds out during Al-Asad’s interrogation and subsequent execution in Azerbaijan that Imran Zakhaev was Al-Asad’s weapons supplier. In his subsequent final mission during the second Russian civil war, which is carried out together with U.S. Marines, the goal is to take away Imran Zakhaev’s nuclear weapons. Part of the plan here was to capture Imran Zakhaev’s son Victor. To accomplish this, Soap and his allies capture an ultra-nationalist outpost. When a convoy led by Victor Zakhaev himself arrives a few hours later, the Bravo Team members disguised as Russian guards first let him in, but early on show their true intentions and attack the convoy. In the ensuing battle, Soap and Griggs provide sniper support from a high tower. However, Victor rams this tower with his jeep, causing the tower to collapse and thus creating the distraction necessary for him to escape. He is then pursued by the Bravo team through a village, leading to his conversion. However, not wanting to reveal his father’s secrets, he commits suicide before Soap can take his gun away from him.
As a result, Imran Zakhaev, angered by the death of his son, threatens to bombard the East Coast of the United States with nuclear missiles if American and British troops are not withdrawn from Russia. To minimize the threat posed by Zakhaev, Soap, Price, Gaz, Griggs, and continuing members of the S.A.S. parachute over the Altai Mountains to reach Zakhaev’s launch site. After the team is delayed by Griggs’ breakaway from the group and his subsequent capture, they manage to free Griggs and disrupt the facility’s power supply by having Soap bring down a power pole with C4. Zakhaev then attempts to launch two nuclear missiles. Soap and his team then fight against time to reach the launch facility and abort the launch, which they succeed in doing. Nevertheless, Zakheav manages to escape and stop the S.A.S. group’s escape by using his Mi-24 Hind to damage a bridge over which the team was trying to escape. This causes the jeep in which Soap and his comrades were escaping to crash, whereupon the occupants of the jeep must continue fighting on their own. In the ensuing fight, Soap is knocked to the ground and injured by an exploding tanker truck. Griggs manages to pull Soap into cover before he himself is killed. Soap, lying on the ground, can only watch helplessly as Gaz and two other members of the S.A.S. are executed by Zakhaev and his bodyguards. When all hope seems lost, a Loyalist Mi-28 destroys the Ultranationalists’ Mi-24 Hind, whereupon Zakhaev and his men must turn away from Soap to strafe the Mi-28. This allows the badly wounded Price to slide his M1911 across the ground to Soap, who then uses it to kill Zakhaev and two of his bodyguards. Shortly after, Loyalist forces arrive on the scene and Kamarov helps Soap and assures him that he will be fine. Soap faints while being taken away, but survives his wounds, as does Price.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
After the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, MacTavish returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and gets back into action early on. His first confirmed mission is in Kazakhstan along with Gary Sanderson. Their mission, secure a downed ACS module in a small outlying enemy facility. The facility is heavily guarded but the two are able to take out the entire base on their own and secure the ACS module. Soap, however, is threatened and nearly executed by Major Petrov and his men near the end of the mission. Roach, however, was able to create a distraction and kill Petrov and his men. Soap and Roach then escape the facility together via snowmobiles and are rescued by Shepherd’s men. After the massacre at Zakhaev International Airport and Joseph Allen’s death at the same time, his next target is Rio De Janeiro. This time, the task force sends 141 more people go off and a good friend of Soap, Ghost, supports them in this mission. Right at the beginning of the mission, they are attacked and almost shot by Rojas’ assistant. However, Soap and his team are able to stop him and Rojas. Even though they suffered a few losses from fighting in the slum, they completed it with success. Now another problem awaits Soap, the helicopters can’t get through to them and it seems that they are stuck in Rio de Janeiro but the enemy militia wants them dead and is hunting them. But then the right idea comes to them: Nikolai. He doesn’t think twice and sets off for Brazil with his Pave Low. In the meantime, Soap and his squad fight their way through the streets so that they can reach Nikolai’s Pave Low with little difficulty and escape. In The Only Beautiful Day… was yesterday, Soap’s task is to secure a small oil rig placed just off the Russian coast. However, they can’t immediately advance to the actual target, the gulag where Prisoner 627 is held, because this oil rig is blocking the way there. But they also can’t blow up this rig yet, because there are hostages there. So it’s up to Soap and TF 141 to secure the rig and free the hostages. After succeeding with this mission, they can advance via helicopter to the gulag, which is located in an ancient fortress. Using sniper rifles, they can then secure the outer walls and land safely in the courtyard. After landing, Soap briskly made his way to the lower corridors and finally to the cell of 627. Soap must immediately realize that it is his old best friend John Price. After rescuing him, the four remaining quickly run to the exit, which unfortunately gets buried. Soap doesn’t think twice and sets off a flare to give away their position and they finally escape. With John Price at his side, Soap and 141 head out into the freezing cold to destroy a submarine that has loaded interplanetary missiles and plans to use it to attack the United States. Although Price was already on the sub, they were launched and the missiles exploded, triggering an EMP in America. After this minor setback, Soap and his team split up to hit Makarov at two possible points. Soap and Price go to Afghanistan with an army of Shepherd’s men while Roach, Ghost and about 10 men from 141 go to a small hideout on the Russian-Georgian border. When Ghost and Roach are betrayed by Shepherd and killed in an ambush, Shepherd gives orders for Soap and Price to be exicuted in Afghanistan. However, the two realize it earlier than Roach and Ghost and are able to shoot their way out for the time being. The two split up and then meet at a small airstrip to be rescued by Nikolai. Shepherd’s men, however, get caught up in a small conflict with Makarov’s men and Soap is now alone against hundreds of troops for the time being. He is able to fight his way to Price and Rook, however, and thus ride in Nikolai’s plane. Rook is shot just before the loading ramp, however, and Soap has to steer the vehicle into the plane with his left hand. Once on board, they were flown by Nikolai to the desert where Makarov says Shepherd is staying. Makaraov’s information was correct and Soap and Price stormed the facility and took out most of Shepherd’s bodyguards, the Shadow Company. Once Shepherd was out of the base, he had the facility bombed and killed the rest of his men, though he only wanted Price and Soap. Slightly dazed, however, the two get back up and pursue Shepherd by dinghy through the river. When Shepherd’s Pave Low was brought down by Price, the two fall down a waterfall and Soap wakes up shortly after and staggers to the crash site. Shepherd survived the crash and is resting by a car. When Soap tries to kill him with his knife, Shepherd slams Soap’s head against the car and stabs him in the chest with the knife. When Shepherd pointed his Magnum, with which he also killed Roach and Ghost, at Soap and explained to him why he betrayed Task Force 141 and then wanted to shoot him, Price jumps at Shepherd, saving Soap’s life. When Price is knocked unconscious, Soap pulls the knife out of his chest in great pain and throws out Shepherd. The knife hits right in Shepherd’s right eye and he dies at the same moment. Nikolai then arrives with his AH-6 and takes Price and Soap to India, as Soap is in desperate need of help.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
After Nikolai takes the injured Soap to a doctor in India. Makarov, however, wants to finish it here and now and attacks Soap’s hideout. The Russian troops storm the facility but can be held back by Yuri, who has just been recruited into the task force by Nikolai, and Price. They escape to Nikolai’s helicopter and so have to flee again. Soap, however, has recovered to some extent and is thus able to rejoin the next mission in Sierra Leone. Yuri, who is also a Russian like Makarov, reveals to Soap and Price that a shipment for Makarov is landing in Sierra Leone. However, they do not know what is in the container, but they do know that she wants Makarov at any cost. So Soap, Price and Yuri fight their way through the village and take down the enemy militia in drag. When they reach their destination, they miss the goods by a few seconds. After this setback, they move on to Somalia, where a contact of Makarov, Waraabe, is staying. Along with Team Bravo, 141 storm the outside facility and capture Waraabe and interrogate him. After he unpacks what they wanted, Price shoots Waraabe as a receipt for the “boys in Herford.” They ask Nikolai to pick them up, but a sandstorm is brewing and to top it all off Soap and his men are ambushed and from that point on they have one minute to reach the LZ. They manage to do so but Nikolai’s Pave Low is taken out of the sky and it crashes in the desert in the middle of the sandstorm. Soap, Price and Yuri immediately start the rescue operation and are then able to escape Somalia in two jeeps along with Nikolai. Soap’s next and last mission is in Prague, Czech Republic. His mission: to come together with Yuri through the city to a church tower across from the Lustig Hotel in order to carry out an assassination attempt on Makarov. However, Makarov suspected this and had his men place C4 in the church tower beforehand. As they were about to fire, the tower exploded. However, Soap quickly shifted gears and took Yuri and they jumped out of the church tower a few seconds before. Soap loses a lot of blood and is no longer able to fight. Price carries him to safety while Yuri shoots her way out. When they put Soap on a table in a bar to take care of him, he succumbs to his injuries and dies. His last words were, “Yuri … knows … Makarov.”
Operation Kingfish
In the fan film Operation Kingfish, Soap also appears when he secures some buildings together with Price, Roach and Ghost. However, Makarov placed a bomb in a room but Soap and his men are still able to lie down and thus survive. Later Soap is seen checking his ammunition and magazines and wants to know from Shepherd who Kingfish is. When Shepherd identifies Kingfish as Vladimir Makarov, Soap stabs Makarov in the file with his knife.
