Biography
Born and raised on the outskirts of Cleveland, Pvt. Smith was always a skilled craftsman. His father worked in a bank while his mother worked as an elementary school teacher. But John wasn’t happy until he got to fix machines. Long before the war in Europe, Smith had been a mechanic with an artillery division, where he spent years repairing rifles and vehicles. The 1st Infantry needed reinforcements, however, and he suddenly found himself on the battlefield without a single day of basic training. At the start of the war, John Jackson was just 28 years old and in good shape. But in the time he spent repairing machinery, he got a little rounder.
Schmitty joined Fox Company as a replacement for the late Victor Denley.
