Assassination in Pripyat – 1996
In 1996, two British snipers, Cpt. MacMillan and Lt. Price, assassinated Imran Zakhaev while he was having a meeting with other colleagues. Using a Barrett M82, Lt. Price fired from an opposite high-rise building. However, he missed the target by millimeters and instead hit his left arm, severing it. Zakhaev was thus able to escape seriously injured with Vladimir Makarov and Yuri.
Death – 2011
After the SAS and the USMC had to flee from Russia in 2011 and thus through the Altai Mountains to the secondary landing zone, because the primary one has been destroyed. On a bridge, a Russian helicopter briefly knocks out the SAS and USMC team, and when everyone regains consciousness, Zakhaev appears in the smoke and shoots two of the team’s soldiers. When a Loyalist helicopter distracts Zakhaev, he is shot by John “Soap” MacTavish with an M1911. After his death, he is celebrated as a martyr in Russia.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
In an intro scene of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a statue of Zakhaev is shown with the inscription “Герой новой России” engraved below it. This means something like “Hero of the New Russia”. This additionally underlines that the ultranationialists venerate him as a martyr. Moreover, Zakhaev is mentioned in a dialogue between Price and Makarov in the mission “The enemy of my enemy”. Here, Price says Makarov should give Zakhaev his best regards in hell if he gets there first.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
When Captain MacTavish succumbs to his severe injuries in Prague, his last words were, “Makarov … knows … Yuri.”. Price then confronted Yuri at gunpoint. When the latter then begins to tell his backstory with Vladimir Makarov, a cutscene appears as a figurative representation, in which Imran Zakhaev is shown as he had fallen victim to the assassination attempt of Lt. Price and Cpt. MacMillan in 1996 and jumps into Yuri’s car, severely wounded, and thus is able to escape.
Call of Duty: Ghosts
In the micro DLC of Call of Duty: Ghosts it is possible to purchase Zakhaev as a multiplayer character for 1.99€.
