Gersh was a Russian scientist and the leader of the Ascension group. He led Project Donner and worked with Yuri Zavoyski on the Gersh Device (Project Mercury) until he transferred the latter to rocket research.

During Yuri’s transition into madness, Gersh noticed his aggressiveness toward other scientists and the fact that he was talking to himself. As a result, he addressed Yuri directly while he was working on the Gersh Device and told him to leave.
