He was ahead of his time

To become a legend in #MMORPGs like #WorldofWarcraft, you’ve got to make quite an impact. Or evoke the right reactions at the right time. One who was particularly good at this was the undead villain #Grim.

Grim was a rogue in #VanillaWoW, which was over 17 years ago at the time. Much like the legendary #Angwe, Grim is also a PvP talent. However, he doesn’t rely so much on nasty assassination tactics.

In the community, Grim is considered one of the best rogue players in Vanilla. It doesn’t compare to today’s skill levels, but back in the day, his name certainly inspired awe.

However, his handling of the class and his skill in PvP was not the only reason Grim became so well known. He was one of the first to show off his talent so well.

Viral videos before there were viral videos

What makes Grim so special?

Unlike the dreaded Angwe, Grim has recorded his fights and duels and posted them online. Some of his first recordings are from 2006, back just before Google bought YouTube.

Many recordings from WoW didn’t exist at the time, and those that did often only had a miserable resolution of 240p or 360p – so pretty crappy. Accordingly, it was hard to see how exactly some of the top players were actually playing so well, you couldn’t see any keys on the videos.

Grim was among the first to present their skills in compilations. On his YouTube channel you can now even find the re-up of his first compilation as an HD version:

Where does success come from?

Among the first and most famous videos of Grim is a PvP fight against the paladin Zalgradis. At the time, Zalgradis was a household name who amazed many players with his PvP skills.

Grim managed to spread his name quickly by flaunting his own achievements, compiling his highlights, and collaborating with other well-known players.

Even before Twitter and YouTube algorithms existed, his videos were going through the community. Today, Grim even runs a Patreon page, but is only marginally active. Still, his name keeps popping up among WoW fans.

“Grim was an exceptional player”.

When Grim releases a new or old video, at least a small group of his fans celebrate the day. In a reddit post from 2019, some members of the community explain what makes Grim so fascinating:

“By the standard of the time, Grim was an exceptional player […] he was ahead of his time. His movement in general was one of his most outstanding skills, everything was fluid and he was also mechanically good.

After he stopped making videos, he started Arena at a high rank in Burning Crusade. He was one of the best in his battlefield group. Gladiator and above in every seaon he had played, not just some swanky video maker. There were a lot of those, but Grim wasn’t one of them.”

Another praises that it was way above the knowledge level of most players at the time. Hardly anyone knew about proper key bindings and co. With the proliferation of Google Videos and WCM at the time, it was also hard to acquire such things. YouTube and wide-ranging information about WoW didn’t exist to that extent back then.
