Hardly any interest in new – Season “Wind Bastion”

At the end of October Ubisoft still announced that Rainbow Six Siege has now reached over 40 million players – doubling the number since May 2017. The company has probably put an end to the rapid increase in players with the announced changes for the China release.

Only little interest in Operation

At the Pro League Finals in Brazil on November 18, 2018, Ubisoft will unveil the final – Season of the third Victory-Year. The shooter gets two new characters and a new map. Interest in the new – Season is restrained.

Significantly fewer players than previous reveals can get excited about the content update – this also shows a look at the Twitter account of Rainbow Six Siege:

On August 07, 2018, Ubisoft announced that. Operation Grim Sky will be unveiled at the Six Major in Paris. On the short message service, the announcement still caused 22,000 likes and over 1400 comments.

For comparison: The announcement of Operation Wind Bastion brings it to just 13,000 likes and 644 comments – many of them with cynical or critical comments regarding the planned censorship of the game.

“Operation Censorhip”: What happened?

On November 02, Ubisoft published a blog post in which the developers announced aesthetic changes for Rainbow Six Siege announced. The background to this is the official release of the game in China.

The point of contention for the community: The visual adjustments made specifically for the Chinese market partially affect all players. For example, some artwork will be adjusted, the slot machines on the map “Clubhouse” will disappear and blood splatters already present on the map will be removed.

No gambling references for China, no references for the community. I wonder what this means for the casino on the map “Yacht”?

The criticism was not long in coming. Numerous players announced in the game’s subreddit that they would boycott the title in the future. The term “Operation Censorship” quickly established itself within the community.

The subreddit of Rainbow Six Siege sank into chaos for a day. The front page was flooded with new posts and criticism almost every minute. Feedback on the aesthetic changes is now concentrated in a collective post. But for a while it looked like this in the Victory-Reddit from:

The posts in the screenshot are just a small sample of the mood in the Siege Reddit.

The community managers wanted to appease

The statement of community manager UbiNoty on Reddit further heated the discussion:

“We understand that in some cases it is not possible to rely on a global version. So there is content that will differ regionally.

With that, the community manager leveraged Ubisoft’s original argument, for efficiency reasons only a global version of Rainbow Six Siege want to support. Community Developer Craig Robinson also clarified that drastic changes will be made in local versions after all.

But this raises the question, why the aesthetic changes need to be applied to the US and EU versions of the game at all.

Too sexy for China: The dancer on Clubhouse is replaced by a hand.

Ubisoft has not yet commented after the criticism

To date, the publisher has not provided a detailed explanation. Whether Ubisoft will be at the Pro League Finals as part of the unveiling of Operation Wind Bastion will comment on the issue again on November 17 and 18 is unclear.

What do you think of the announced changes and the communication on them so far? Has this changed your interest in Rainbow Six Siege limited or is it all just half bad? Let us know in the comments!

The artwork of “The Four Horsemen” also needs to be adjusted due to Chinese specifications.
