In Overwatch, a kind of curious exploit is currently circulating for players of Wrecking Ball. This exploit means that certain rounds can be dragged out almost indefinitely without the opponents having much of a chance to fight back.
Situation: It is currently possible for the Hammond hamster in Overwatch to fight over an attack point without being attacked himself. This prevents opponents from capturing the points or, in the case of defense, from completing the map.
At the moment, the exploit is only known to work on the “Shrine” sub-map in Nepal. However, the mechanics suggest that Hanamura may be similarly affected.
A hamster to subjugate them
How does the exploit work? Wrecking Ball, one of Overwatch’s newest heroes, uses a mechanic that no other hero in Overwatch can use. His hook allows him to grab onto objects and swing from them.
The mechanics are strongly linked to the game physics and also gave Wrecking Ball his name “Wrecking Ball”. He can push back enemies by swinging and catapult himself to get to remote locations.
One such place is the roof of the shrine in Nepal. If a Hammond swings up over the edge of the roof with a lot of momentum, he can get stuck on the roof. There he is still exactly in the radius of the point below to attack or defend.
What can I do about it? To remove Hammond from there, the opposing team needs a hero with the ability to change Hammond’s position. But since he is above, the hero must also be able to move vertically.
To counter this exploit, only a handful of heroes are useful because of this:
- Pharah with her concussion pulse
- D.Va with her boosters
- Lúcio with his sound amplifier
- an opponent Hammond
These heroes can be used to drive Hammond from his position on the roof.
However, the exploit is a disadvantage for Hammond’s team anyway. This is because in every battle his teammates are outnumbered. So taking the point proves to be quite difficult.
The exploit doesn’t do much: So other than annoying other players, there is little added value from using this exploit. In the long run, users will probably lose the round anyway and may even be penalized by Blizzard.
We therefore do not recommend exploiting it in public games. In private games with friends, however, it could result in fun challenges.
