New to FIFA Ultimate Team? Then you’ve come to the right place. In this series, we’ll explain each part of Ultimate Team and help you get started. This week we’re looking at the different game modes of FUT.
Ultimate Team is all about building the best team possible…. But there’s no point in having a strong team without also playing with it.
In FUT 20, players have five main modes to choose from, which include a variety of offline and online methods: Squad Battles, Rivals, FUT Champions, Draft and Friendlies.
Squad Battles
We’ll start with FUT’s main offline mode: Squad Battles. In this mode, players battle against other Ultimate Team squads of players from around the world.
In Squad Battles, up to 40 CPU matches can be played against other teams each week. There is also a Featured Squad Battle, which includes a fantasy XI selected by a professional soccer player or other celebrity, and always starting on Wednesday can be played against the FUT Team of the Week (TOTW) from the previous weekend. So in total, players can participate in up to 42 Squad Battles per week.
At the start of a new round of Squad Battles, players are presented with four squads to play against – usually in ascending difficulty, although you can play against them in any order. If, for whatever reason, you don’t want to play against any of the four teams on offer, the teams can be swapped. However, this means that these four teams disappear from the pool, reducing the maximum number of matches from 42.
Before each game, you have the option to select the CPU difficulty you want to play against. Each game gives points depending on your success in the previous game – this can take into account everything from the score to possession and tackling stats. The higher the difficulty level, the more points are earned. However, you should try to win as many games as possible, since you hardly get any points for defeats. In addition, coins are given out after each game – these are also determined by the result and performance.
The more points you collect, the further you climb up the Squad Battles leaderboard, which is divided into Bronze, Silver, Gold and Elite levels, each with three sub-levels – e.g. Gold 1, Gold 2 and Gold 3. Above Elite, there are separate ranks for the top 100 players, but they are out of reach for most players.
Squad Battles take place over the course of a week, starting on Monday and ending on Sunday. The rank you hold on Sunday night determines what rewards you receive. Of course, the value of the rewards increases with each level, so the more games won, the better rewards you get. The rewards are almost always paid out in the form of packs and coins.
Rivals
This is the main online game mode in FUT and like Squad Battles, players play against other squads from all corners of the world.
Those playing Rivals for the first time must first play five qualifying matches before being assigned to a division between one and ten. Obviously, the lower the league, the tougher the opponents.
Rivals is unique in FUT in that it is the only game mode where you can be relegated and promoted. Players receive a skill rating from their first five qualifying matches. With each win, this rating increases and if you win enough games, you are promoted to a higher league. But be careful, with many defeats you can also be relegated. But this system is also the charm of Rivals.
Of course, Rivals also offers weekly rewards, which are always paid out on Thursdays, the same day that the new week of Rivals begins. The rewards in this mode differ from those of Squad Battles in that there are only five ranks for each division, with each rank offering better rewards than the last.
As in Squad Battles, you are rewarded for winning matches and receive a weekly score that determines what rank you reach at the end of the week and what rewards you receive afterwards.
FUT Champions
Also known as Weekend League, FUT Champions is probably the most difficult game mode in Ultimate Team.
FUT Champions starts on Friday and runs until Sunday. In this mode, which can only be played online, you compete against other players from all over the world and a maximum of 30 matches can be played in one weekend.
As with Squad Battles, the rewards in FUT Champions are tiered by Elite, Gold, Silver and Bronze ranks. To advance through the various ranks of the Weekend League, you simply need to win matches; one or two wins will guarantee Bronze 3, for example, while two or three wins could secure you a spot in Bronze 2.
Each division offers rewards such as coins, special FUT cards (usually a modified version of a current TOTW card) and FUT Champions points.
Thus, if you win 11-13 matches in a weekend, you are guaranteed 2,000 FUT Champions points and automatic qualification for the next Weekend League. However, you can of course redeem the points at a later date if you wish.
Earning 2,000 FUT Champions points can take a long time, so try to play as many games as possible if you want to make it to the Weekend League. Getting 11-13 wins in 30 games or more should be an achievable goal for most players and will save a lot of time in Rivals.
The FUT Champions rewards are always given out on Thursdays, the same day as the Rivals rewards, which means that Thursdays are particularly profitable for many players.
