Fortnite is a game played by little kiddies who play voice chat while wildly throwing walls and stairs into the landscape. Or?

This prejudice has been running around in my head since the release of the colorful BattleRoyale game, which is why I have not only given it a wide berth, but a huge one. I knew that I was probably doing the game an injustice, but I never had the motivation to convince myself otherwise.

However, after #Epic removed THAT feature in Fortnite not only on a test basis, but (optionally) completely, that changed fundamentally. With the permanent Zero Build Mode (what a simple but dorky name) I finally ventured into it and was pleasantly surprised.

Annika doesn’t really play multiplayer shooters, especially Battle Royale games. She does enjoy the occasional game of CoD Warzone, but she doesn’t have to build entire dens on the side like she does in Fortnite. So far, that’s been the main reason why Annika doesn’t like Battle Royale shooters.

Fortnite first had to lose the building compulsion to win me over.

It’s a bit absurd, because actually building is in my blood. And by that I don’t just mean my fondness for building games like The Sims 4, Cities: Skylines and Rimworld, but also in real life. I grew up on construction sites, so to speak, and was always good at crafts. But pulling up walls and stairs in Fortnite? Without me!

Maybe it’s also the dark time due to pandemic and war that makes me additionally susceptible to Fortnite’s colorful and joyful style now.

Whether or not Fortnite is overrun by little kids is a moot point. The mere fact that I have to collect resources and use them to nimbly pull up walls and more to even have a chance put me off, after all. In addition, I appreciate a certain degree of realism in such games.

I don’t mean the graphics, but the sometimes strange-looking buildings that some players conjure up on the screen in seconds. I, on the other hand, prefer it a bit more sedate. Even if I have game-related disadvantages from it, I prefer to build close to reality.

A good five years later, however, Fortnite has now freed us from the building constraint. This cleared the way for me to prove myself alone with my skills at the gun. Finding the right loot, taking cover, a bit of tactics – that’s all I really want. And even beyond that, I was pleasantly surprised: The game runs pleasantly smoothly, the world is really easy to read despite strong colors, and there was no trace of annoying kidds in my played games.
