In an interview, Twitch streamer Kathleen “Loserfruit” Belsten was asked if Fortnite was dying. Her answer to that is pretty clear: No. Why she sees it that way, summarizes MeinMMO for you.
Who is that anyway?
28-year-old Kathleen “Loserfruit” Belsten is one of the most popular streamers on Fortnite and is also one of the biggest female Twitch streamers ever.
She hails from Australia and streams a wide variety of games on a daily basis. She has been streaming Among Us and Fortnite especially often in the last 90 days. But she also played games like Call of Duty and Rocket League. She also became known for a skin she got in Battle Royale in the summer of 2020.
She now gave an interview to the US website Dexerto and it was specifically about the current state of Fortnite. The question was also asked whether Fortnite is dying.
Why does the question come up at all?
That depends on which players you ask. Some of them left after the map was changed because they didn’t like the new one.
Some miss the old map so much that one player even rebuilt it. As a result, some of the older, active players have jumped ship. Although the game keeps getting new skins and content, there are always claims from the community that Fortnite is dying.
She strongly disagrees, even having to laugh at the question. The situation is very good, she says, and it should get much better if she has her way.
Fortnite will not die, the next peak is coming
Why doesn’t she think Fortnite is dying?
The reason why some players complain, according to Loserfruit, is the current situation in Fortnite. This is in a kind of waiting phase:
I think we’re in a waiting period with Fortnite now, where the game is going to hit its next big peak. When that happens, I think people will stop thinking it’s dead.
She also claims that Fortnite is currently in its best state since release. In the last few months, Epic Games has added a lot of features to the game that will only bear fruit in the long run.
For example, she says, “They [die Entwickler] have created more ways to travel quickly across the map, there are new fun items, and balance-wise, it’s the best and most enjoyable.”
Personally, she would like to see additional ranked modes to make grinding more worthwhile. Overall, though, she sees Fortnite in very good shape. Of course, as a Fortnite streamer, she’s a little biased on that point. Based on pure player numbers, it’s more a matter of interpretation.
Fortnite has numbers going down, but still has millions of players
How many players does Fortnite even have?
In general, it’s hard to say how many people are actively playing the game. After all, Epic Games does not release any figures itself. In 2018, Fortnite had its absolute peak with over 70 million active players.
The last time the double-digit million was probably cracked was in December 2020, when the Galactus event took place:
- According to estimates from the PlayerCounter site, over 15 million players were playing simultaneously at the time. Over the course of the year, between 4 and 8 million players were active on average (via dexerto.com).
- So the fluctuations are high, yet the numbers keep in a strong range compared to other games. For example, the classic shooter Counter Strike has almost 2 million simultaneously active players at its highest numbers (via steamcharts.com).
- In recent months, Counter Strike’s numbers have been between over 400,000 and 500,000 players. Fortnite is currently (as of October 27, 18:40) at around 2.8 million active players (via PlayerCounter.com).
Fortnite has definitely lost popularity. This is probably not only due to the content, but also the age of the game. Fortnite has been around for over 5 years now.
However, it is still one of the biggest and most successful online games of all time and has managed to maintain a high level of interest for years. An imminent death looks different. Future major events should also certainly see an increase in activity.
What do you guys think? Do you see Fortnite on the decline, or do you see it like Loserfruit?
