No game is currently more successful: “Fortnite: Battle Royale” is played by millions worldwide. But what actually makes the comic-style shooter special? Here is an overview of the most important facts.
Stuttgart – More than 40 million people worldwide play “Fortnite: Battle Royale.” Since September 2017, the game from Epic Games has been attracting more and more fans and catching up with its competitor “PlayersUnkown Battlegrounds” (PUBG) in terms of numbers. For those who don’t know what the game is about, here are the most important facts.
What is it about?
In “Fortnite: Battle Royale”, teams of one to four players play against each other on an island. There are a total of 100 players on the map. The team that survives to the end wins the round. To prevent the players from simply hiding somewhere and holding out until there are hardly any opponents left, there is a damage-free zone that gradually shrinks. Those who remain outside lose life points (HP) or even die. The survivors are thus rounded up and sent into the confrontation.
Free
The game is available for free for PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4 and now also for iOS. A version for Android is to follow. The game supports cross-over gaming, which means that PC players, for example, can also compete against console players. However, this only happens if your own team already consists of mixed players. Smartphone players are inferior to console and PC opponents for technical reasons (controls).
PUBG, on the other hand, costs 20 to 30 Euros and is available for PC and Xbox One.
In-game purchases and virtual currency
Epic Games makes several million dollars in revenue with “Fortnite: Battle Royale” anyway. This works via in-game content sales. However, players can only customize their looks and actions here. There are no game advantages, such as better weapons. Payment is made with the virtual currency V-Bucks. 1000 V-Bucks cost around 10 euros. Players can also earn small amounts of V-Bucks by completing tasks.
Where do players start?
The adventure starts with a flying bus. Yes, that’s right, a flying bus! Thanks to a hot air balloon, this one floats over the island. Players can choose a jump point from here and then glide to the ground with an umbrella.
The island
The island is one square kilometer in size, making the game area much smaller than PUBG (64 square kilometers). 19 settlements and towns are spread across the island, offering different resources and geographical features.
The pickaxe
The biggest difference of “Fortnite: Battle Royale” and PUBG is not the graphics, but the pickaxe, which players can use in Fortnite to chop everything short to collect building materials: Wood, stone and metal. This, in turn, can be used to build stairs, houses or bunkers to protect themselves from enemies or to reach remote locations. This feature is strongly reminiscent of the game principle of “Minecraft”.
Collecting or “looting
As soon as players arrive on the island, the big collecting starts: weapons, ammunition and building materials are put into the player’s inventory. This hoarding is called “looting” in video games. In Fortnite: Battle Royale, items can also be shared among each other.
Resources and building
The three building resources, wood, stone, and metal, have different properties. Wooden pieces can be built quickly, but do not withstand shelling for long. On the other hand, metal walls are more resistant, but also take a longer time to build.
Finding wood is not difficult. There is plenty of it on the island through fences or trees. Stones can be obtained from houses, metal, which is the rarest, can be obtained from machines or vehicles, such as caravans.
The three resources can be used to build walls, stairs, floors, slopes, or roofs, which can then be assembled into entire buildings. Once a wall is standing, it can be fitted with windows, doors or recesses.
Why is building important?
Building is an elementary part of “Fortnite: Battle Royal” for two reasons and is crucial for victory or defeat: On the one hand, walls offer protection and retreat options, and on the other hand, players on a hill, for example by building a tower, always have an advantage over players who are below them.
Dancing
Cool moves are as much a part of “Fortnite: Battle Royale” as the pickaxe. The game offers various “emotes,” short choreographies that the character can perform at the touch of a button. A few are available for free, others are paid.
