One of the dominant topics in the video game industry continues to be the planned takeover of U.S. publishing giant Activision Blizzard by software giant Microsoft. Saudi Arabia was the first country to give its blessing to the takeover.
At the beginning of the year, Microsoft announced its intention to take over the Californian publisher Activision Blizzard at a price of almost 69 billion US dollars. Since not only various well-known developer studios such as Blizzard Entertainment or Infinity Ward, but also successful brands such as “Call of Duty” or “Diablo” will change hands with this takeover, the takeover is currently being investigated by various regulatory authorities.
While a commitment from the corresponding institutions in Europe and the U.S. respectively is still waiting, Saudi Arabia is not putting any obstacles in the way of Microsoft’s plans. The takeover of Activision Blizzard was recently approved by the General Authority for Competition.
Experts expect takeover to be completed soon
According to the information provided by the Saudi Arabian government, “the General Authority for Competition announces that it has no objections to the completion of the merger process between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard.” Currently, the acquisition is being reviewed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC for short), among others. However, experts assume that the FTC will also not raise any objections to the takeover and will give it the green light shortly.
Critics cited the popular Call of Duty series as a possible sticking point. However, since Microsoft has repeatedly stated in recent weeks that it has no interest in publishing “Call of Duty” exclusively in the Xbox ecosystem and would instead like to continue supplying the PlayStation consoles with the series, there should be no serious objections to the planned takeover from the regulatory authorities.
