FIFA ratings explained: How is the overall rating (OVR) created?

ratings cause discussions shortly before the release of the new FIFA. And that’s the case every – Season without exception. EA is criticized from all sides when they have once again rated players as too good or too bad. But how are these FIFA ratings composed? How does a FUT card get its OVR?

Every football fan loves discussions about their favorite players’ FIFA ratings. Last summer, for example, fans of FC Bayern Munich were upset because Bayern were rated surprisingly poorly as Champions winners. Many believe this is due to Bayern Munich’s partnership with FIFA competitor eFootball (formerly PES).

But the FIFA ratings are made up of many different factors. We explain what’s behind it.

FIFA Ratings Explained: How is the OVR formed?

The OVR (overall), or in German GES (total), is made up of all of the player’s in-game values. In addition, the position plays a crucial role – but it should be clear that a Lewandowski as a central defender does not have a good rating. The stats on the FUT card don’t matter for the final OVR! But to understand, we must go into detail.

FIFA Ratings: More than 17,000 players in the game

Every year in FIFA there are more than 30 leagues , more than 700 clubs and more than 17,000 players . And each and every one of those players needs to be scouted for a fair rating to be given.

Even the players promoted to the 3rd division have to be observed to find out the pace of the respective player. Of course, this is only possible with an extensive scouting team.

FIFA Talent Scouts

EA has to use a lot of resources to build a decent scouting team. We wouldn’t mind if EA expanded the team to ensure fair ratings. We butter so much money in FUT every year that you could afford it. The FIFA scouting team employs around 30 producers and more than 400 freelancers scouting players for EA . There are also more than 6,000 data reviewers who strengthen the team with assessments and advice. These data reviewers are community owned, not employed or paid by EA. Bad.

Head of Data Collection, Michael Müller-Möhring, told ESPN:

“We have many leagues in the game; no stats provider could offer us data for all these leagues, teams and players […]. This is also the reason why we use this online database, because it’s not possible to buy this data some way – it just doesn’t exist.”

EA has created a unique database through its talent scouts and can thus evaluate all the different leagues and players as objectively as possible.

Rating boss Müller-Möhring also commented on the inevitably bad Bayern ratings in FIFA 21:

“Honestly, Corona is also to blame here. We were under a lot of time pressure due to the unforeseen circumstances and had to get out very early. Unfortunately, some of the games from
last – Season were not included in the evaluation. If we look at the performances from them had included, some values would definitely be higher.”

However, Corona should no longer be an excuse for FIFA 22, because there was enough time to look at all the games in detail.

You too can become a data reviewer, but extensive football knowledge is a prerequisite. Here is the link to apply .

How is the FIFA rating determined?

The FIFA ratings are NOT just made up of the six values of the classic FUT card, i.e. pace, shooting, passing, dribbling, and physique. These are just the main categories for many other attributes. There are 35 values in total that go into the OVR . There are various coefficients that evaluate the player position -dependent.

For a defender, attributes such as tackle, header accuracy and interceptions are rated higher in the coefficient than finishing or dribbling. All of the coefficients add up to a value of 1. To illustrate this, we have created a table for you here using the example of Virgil van Dijk’s rating from FIFA 20.

The overall score resulting from all the different factors in this case was 87.66 at VVD . This number is rounded up or down , resulting in a rating of 88 . However, the Dutchman had a 90 OVR in FIFA 20 and FIFA 21, which reflects international recognition, which is rated with stars . You may have seen this on FUTBIN before and wondered what that even is.

Are you interested in ratings? Then check out our rating prediction for FC Barcelona , Bayern Munich and PSG .

This is how a FIFA rating is created

International recognition is rated from 1-5 stars. 1 or 2 star players will not get an OVR boost. From a 51 rating, an actor will get +1 OVR if they have 3 stars in that category. For four-star players , this becomes +1 OVR between 36-66 OVR and +2 OVR for 67-99 OVR. Five Star players will receive a +1 OVR boost for 24-49, +2 OVR for 50-74, and +3 OVR for 75-99. Van Dijk had four stars (+2 OVR) in FIFA 20. In our example above, Van Dijk has an 88 OVR + 2 OVR , resulting in a final rating of 90 OVR.

FIFA Ratings Explained: How is the OVR formed?

So to sum it up again: EA, together with data reviewers, evaluates the individual attributes of the players, which, depending on their position, are given a coefficient and added up. International recognition is added to this number – and this is how you get a FIFA rating.

A famous example of a FUT card that players don’t understand is Thomas Muller. The Bayern star has no better than 82 on his FUT card, but an overall rating of 86. This is where the principle just explained comes into play, because Müller has high stats in important attributes such as positional play (94), reaction (94), and four stars with international recognition.

FIFA 22 – FUTs

What could be cooler than just relaxed gaming and doing some sofa sports on the side? In FIFA 22, the player is on the move fast, but without getting sore muscles. With the Ultimate Team Event cards, the collecting instinct is now also satisfied. However, the FUT Heroes keep creeping into my mind, so here are the best Ultimate Team Event cards that are definitely worth adding to your collection.

Heroes cards selected by EA for top qualities

Admittedly, the FUT heroes will cost quite a bit of coin, but it turns out that EA has once again brought some top-class players into the game when it comes to selection. As a collector and hunter, it’s an added attraction for FIFA gamers to now include their own favorite heroes in the portfolio and benefit from their individual skills. Both in the game and in team building, the FUTs will revolutionize the game once again.

EA SPORTS FC: FIFA GAME SERIES TO BE CONTINUED UNDER NEW NAME

Of course, the soccer simulation game series will not be discontinued completely. After FIFA 23, EA will relaunch the game under the name EA Sports FC and market it independently. Old FIFA hares should now become quite an ear, after all, the EA Sports Football Club used to be a part of the actual game for years. A lot of playing was rewarded, points could be collected and items, boosts or balls for the individual game modes could be unlocked.

In this context, there could also be a complete revolution of the classic game. There is a heated discussion in the FIFA community about whether the game, which is expected to be released in the fall of 2023, will be free-to-play. This option is said to be on the table for the game makers from EA, because: It seems that EA earns most of its money with the purchases of FIFA Points in the game mode Ultimate Team and not with the sale of the game itself.
