The video game industry is in turmoil. If not for terms like. NFTs or Metaverse are thrown around, the Mega deal around Microsoft and Activision-Blizzard discussed.
While the long-term consequences of the nearly $70 billion deal are yet to be seen, Sony has already struggled with the announcement. Just recently, its market capitalization dropped by 20 billion dollars. To prevent this negative trend, however, Sony might consider buying a major publisher itself. Take-Two and Ubisoft would certainly be options.
But first and foremost, Electronic Arts is being talked about as a possible candidate, one of the biggest and most important companies in the industry. Will brands like FIFA, Madden, Medal of Honor or Battlefield soon only be available on PS5 and possibly PS4?
FIFA only on the PS5?
According to Enders Analysis a purchase of Electronic Arts by Sony would be the most likely scenario, compared to a purchase of Take-Two or Ubisoft. At the same time, however, it also points out that Electronic Arts, with a market value of 37 billion dollars would be significantly more expensive than Ubisoft or Take-Two.
Whether this would automatically leave the popular FIFA soccer franchise only on the Playstation is quite questionable. After all, Sony was only recently promised at least three more Call of Duty parts for the Playstation, despite the mega deal around Microsoft and Activision Blizzard.
Does Disney want to buy EA?
However, Sony is not the only part of the speculation. Disney is also said to be considering buying Electronic Arts for its own expansion of digital offerings. Handler Research raises this possibility by pointing out that Disney’s acquisition of Electronic Arts was a “sports-metaverse” could create thanks to the ESPN brand present in the Disney cosmos. In addition, Disney does not currently develop any games itself. Thus, a publisher like Electronic Arts would represent an attractive purchase for Disney not only through its brands, but also through its numerous studios.
To what extent the current dispute between FIFA and Electronic Arts could influence such a deal with Sony or Disney remains unclear. What role does Netflix play?
