FIFA 23 with NFTs? What EA says

After EA CEO Andrew Wilson spoke of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain as the “future of the industry” as recently as November 2021, there are now new developments. Will NFTs play a role in 23?
NFT

Yes, in the house of EA, plans were probably halfway ready to jump more on the NFTs and Blockchain bandwagon. The (supposedly) new FIFA competitor GOALS will bet on that very horse. Blockchain, secondary market and Web3 are the buzzwords for this.

One after the other. First EA boss Andrew Wilson announced that “collectible character continues to be an important part of our industry and the games we offer our players.” Yip, anyone who’s had a look at FIFA Ultimate Team knows: the system relies on “collect and trade” in a broader sense. Has already worked with Panini stickers and even now the hunt for the best and most valuable players is the special attraction in FUT.

However, they then backpedaled a bit and said, “Whether this is as part of NFTs and Blockchain will have to wait and see. Currently, it’s not something we’re pursuing with any vigor.” Sorry, but it certainly sounds like something is being worked on in the background…. Will we see NFTs in the new FIFA 23?

NFTs and Blockchain in FIFA – That’s what’s behind it
If you ask yourself now: wait, what? NFT…? Boy, what is that and how is that going to work in FUT? Don’t worry: We’ll break it down for you. First of all, NFTs are tokens for unique digital objects, such as items from , or videos (digital artworks).

What makes an NFT special is its uniqueness and rarity, its quality and the most important: its authenticity. Only an original is really worth something. And the value comes from ownership and possession rights to NFTs. You don’t get a picture, or a video of the item, but a URL to the file’s location.

How do NFTs work in FIFA Ultimate Team?

There can be more than one NFT, so the owners share the value of the item. Or in other words: A non-digital Fungible Token would be e.g. a 2 Euro piece, which can be replaced by another 2 Euro piece at any time. The actual value is behind the item – after all, a 2-euro piece doesn’t cost exactly 2 euros to produce, and depending on the minting, a “simple coin” can be worth significantly more than it actually would be.

Does that really sound completely unrealistic to you, that in the (distant) future we won’t be able to draw cards in FUT – but buy NFTs from Superstars? Depending on how much money EA could make with that… they’ll definitely pursue that more closely and then just push it harder after all.

Well… we are curious. The whole criticism around FUT will probably not become quieter in the future.

FIFA 23 RELEASE – WHAT IS KNOWN SO FAR

FIFA 22 is still in full operation, but in the background the game makers of EA Sports are already working on the next part – FIFA 23 will be released in autumn 2022.
But under which name will the classic game be continued in autumn 2022? As things stand, it is not at all certain that the game will continue to bear the name of the world association FIFA. We have the most important information about FIFA 23 for you, why the game series will get a new name and on which consoles the next part of the soccer simulation will be available.

WHEN WILL FIFA 23 BE RELEASED?

We can’t give you an launch date for the next part of the FIFA game series yet. EA hasn’t communicated much in this regard yet, so so far we can only assume that FIFA 23 will be released in the period between mid-September and early October 2022, just like its predecessors. In the past years, the latest launch date of a FIFA game was October 06.
