Since last year it rumbles between #EA and FIFA. In short, it’s about naming rights, licenses and of course a whole bunch of money. According to a rumor from gamesBeat, the latter is also the main reason why you might have to get used to a new name in the future – and to anticipate, it sounds strange and also somehow extremely boring.
Where did the rumor come from?
From the well-known journalist and industry insider #JeffGrubb, who doesn’t always hit the mark with his information, but is very well connected and is considered a credible source. In his article, he refers to anonymous sources close to GamesBeat.

You read it above, according to Grubb EA wants to rename the world’s most successful sports simulation to EA Sports FC. Whether already in the upcoming spin-off, is not known, but quite possible.
Where does the name come from?
Meanwhile, the unusual title isn’t plucked out of thin air, but is based on a trademark EA filed at the end of 2021.
That EA will rename the series is actually not unlikely. Quite the contrary: according to a report in the New York Times, FIFA is demanding over a billion US dollars for the naming rights. But not only the money could be a reason for EA to reorient itself in the future. FIFA is also often in the headlines because of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
What changes for me as a FIFA fan?
Should EA rename the title of its popular sports series, very little will change for you apart from the name. All rights, licenses and the appearance of the players are not owned by FIFA, but by a gaming union called FIFPRO, which represents over 65,000 professional players.

But that was not it yet to the topic of rumors around FIFA 23, which should be confirmed or denied by EA in the coming weeks. We have already learned from industry insider Tom Henderson that the series will get crossplay for the first time with “FIFA 23”. Also, the female players are to be more in focus.
Henderson also talks about two World Cups: Qatar for the men and the one in New Zealand for the women. Furthermore there are rumors that EA wants to offer the FIFA series Free2Play in the future, like Konami with eFootball. But you should consider this information with caution, which of course also concerns the name change. Nothing is confirmed yet, but this year it’s more exciting than ever to see what’s going on in FIFA.
