Now it’s official: EA Sports is parting ways with the “FIFA” name and renaming its soccer series – at least to FIFA 23. EA explains what this means for the game in a statement.
This is the new name: In an official statement, EA Sports announced that the FIFA series will continue in a new form from July 2023: As “EA Sports FC”.
Before that, however, EA Sports will continue as is for another year. “FIFA 23” is to be the last game in cooperation with the current name partner, FIFA.
What will happen with FIFA after FIFA 23?
What remains in EA Sports FC from FIFA? In the statement, EA Sports clarified that the important licenses to real players, leagues and more will remain in “EA Sports FC”. This applies to
- over 19,000 players
- Over 700 teams
- Over 100 stadiums
- And 30 leagues
This also includes exclusive partnerships, for example with the Bundesliga, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and MLS.
In addition, the familiar modes will also return. Ultimate Team, the career mode, Pro Clubs and VOLTA will also find their place in EA Sports FC.
What changes? Here EA holds itself still largely covered. Cam Weber from EA Sports writes in the statement:
“This new independent platform will provide new opportunities – for innovation, creativity and evolution. This is much more than a symbolic change – as EA SPORTS, we are committed to ensuring that EA SPORTS FC is a symbol of change. We are committed to investing meaningfully in the sport, and we look forward to working with a large and growing number of partners to create new authentic experiences that delight, engage and immerse a global fan base.
What does EA say about FIFA 23? Weber emphasizes in the statement that FIFA 23 should be the best and most comprehensive FIFA so far. This includes more features, modes and also players, clubs, leagues and competitions.
Especially interesting: “World Cup Content” is explicitly mentioned. So it’s possible that the World Cup 2022 will be treated special after the release of FIFA 23.
FIFA 23 will be released in autumn as usual. However, an exact date is not yet known.
What about FIFA 22? The changes have no influence on the current FIFA titles yet.
No sudden change: Already for a long time leaks made the rounds that it could come to such a renaming. The terms “EA Sports FC” or “EA Sports Football Club” appeared over months again and again as possible alternatives to “FIFA”. Now it’s official.
The whole discussion about the name was preceded by an announcement from publisher EA in 2021, in which a new name for the “EA Sports soccer games” was openly considered. Among the reasons discussed were the high price of the name license from the FIFA association and questions of influence on the game.
