FIFA 23 dares to make the biggest change

23 has announced the new features for Ultimate Team. Among them is a pretty hefty shakeup: the old chemistry system is being scrapped, and a new one is coming into play. And that brings a lot more freedom. Also, a new mode is coming.

That’s how important the “old” chemistry was: Chemistry was the basic system by which you had to your teams in Ultimate Team. There were individual connections between all the players who stood next to each other on the court, and these connections could vary in strength.

Chemistry got better the more of these 3 factors the players had in common:

This is what the direct connections looked like – you don’t need them anymore

The stronger the connection between players, the higher bonuses to stats they got. At the same time, the stats went down if the chemistry connections weren’t right. In addition, there was an overall team chemistry that also brought bonuses.

This chemistry system severely limited which players in which combinations you could put on your team. As a result, it determined how teams were designed in Ultimate Team for years. But this is now being completely transformed.

Ultimate Team: How the new chemistry works

This is the new system: Chemistry is not completely abolished, but it is significantly loosened. So now there are no connections between players standing next to each other on the court.

Instead, all that matters is that a couple of your players share the values of nationality, club, or league – but exactly where they are positioned doesn’t matter for the connection for now. Then they rise in the chemistry level, where each player can reach three chemistry points.

  • An example: your left defender can now build chemistry with your right defender, strikers left also with goalkeepers.
  • The only thing that matters for each player is that they are in their correct position. So don’t put a keeper in the forward.
The connections no longer exist

Also, all negative effects for your players are removed when chemistry is “bad”. Instead, your players will now always play at least as well as their stats indicate on the map – they will not be weakened just because they have the wrong teammates. There are now only positive effects for good chemistry.

This means that if you get a cool new player who doesn’t actually fit into your team, you can still try him out fairly risk-free.

In addition, the position system will be adjusted a bit. Your players now have fixed alternative positions to which they can switch – for which they then have a certain consumption item. This was already leaked in advance and is now official.

What does this mean for teams? The new system makes it conceivable to build a team with three players from the Premier League, three from the Bundesliga, three from Ligue 1 and two from Serie A – or something like that.

So you have much, much more freedom than before, and can field powerful players and build insane teams across leagues. Chemistry can no longer stop you from putting absolute top strikers like Mbappé and Ronaldo in a team. The problem is that they’re likely to remain hard to come by.

It will also probably make it easier to put in “unusual” cards. There is a really good player in the Portuguese league NOS, but you play mainly Bundesliga players? You can probably still fit him in well.

At the same time, the new system has a danger: chemistry has forced players to get creative to some extent. Now it could happen that everyone just tries to get the “strongest” players and line them up – without somehow having to look that this still fits well together.

What about heros and icons? These cards were very popular precisely because of their chemistry advantages.

Heroes and icons also return in FIFA 23, but they are slightly changed: Icons give a chemistry boost to players with the same nationality, while Heroes boost players with the same league. But you don’t need them as a real “link” anymore.

New mode promises quick rewards for little game time

What is this mode? In addition to the chemistry change, FUT is also getting a new mode called “FUT Moments.” This effectively consists of small game scenes that you have to replay with matching players.

Depending on how well you do, you’ll then get “stars” as rewards, which you can in turn redeem for rewards like packs and players.

These game scenes will be much shorter than normal matches and will also be based in part on encounters and moments from real-life soccer. This is somewhat reminiscent of the game “Score Hero”, a popular soccer mobile game.

This mode could be an interesting change compared to the usual Rivals, Squad Battles and other modes.
