The return of the empire – Electronic Arts once again underscored its dominance in the gaming world with its latest business figures. Millions of gamers throw money down the company’s throat year after year. And with FIFA 22, EA will probably set records again… Although the predecessor knew no bounds.
“This FIFA is really my last FIFA!” – Who doesn’t know the saying? The threat has too often turned out to be harmless, more and more players are reaching for the EA bestseller. As the publisher just recently published, over 31 million people have picked up FIFA 21 for PC or console. Since the first title of the game series in 1993, an absurd 325 million copies have been sold worldwide! Numbers that surely won’t suddenly drop with the new installment FIFA 22… because we’ll all be grabbing it again.

FIFA 21 is the most successful FIFA of all times
FIFA 21 is the best selling FIFA of all times! The 2nd place, which is occupied by FIFA 15 with nearly 19 million sales, has been pulverized by FIFA 21. The main attraction is clearly Ultimate Team. The FUT mode attracts more and more new players every year and excites us especially with the possibility to get the best players in our club – and thus shave the online leagues. Just how important Ultimate Team really is can be seen in EA’s revenue: the gaming company raked in $1.62 billion with its cash cow. For some, it’s outrageous gambling; for others, it’s a retirement plan.
Will FIFA go free-to-play?
With all the dizzying numbers, though, EA has to look ahead. How much longer can this go on? Competitor Konami announced some time ago that it wanted to make PES 2022 a free-to-play title in order to lure disappointed EA customers to its side. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what the game looks like in the end. But it is attractive for us gamers in any case… and above all cheaper! According to some leaks EA itself wants to take this step and start the Free-to-Play variant with FIFA 23. If you look at the absurd sums, which FUT yields, the publisher could afford it for sure.
Will we soon be playing stars like Kylian Mbappé for free?
Besides the FUT mode, EA can also build on its huge community. The 31 million FIFA players are only a small part. EA SPORTS alone has over 140 million players in its games. Games like Apex (13 million players per week) is a game with a strong upward trend. Battlefield 2042, which will be released next October, is also making a lot of money. With such sick numbers, EA would easily be able to handle the free-to-play switch!
In the end, there’s nothing left for us to do but wait and see, and in the best case scenario, play both game series. May the better one win – and hopefully in free-to-play format for our wallets!
