Twitch streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins had his big time with online shooter Fortnite in 2018. But in 2022, he feels like he no longer plays a special role in Epic’s plans. He says he feels like the studio currently hates him. He’s upset that he doesn’t get the support like other, new content creators. He also says Epic has postponed selling his skin again.
What is it with Fortnite and Ninja?
- The game “Fortnite: Battle Royale” experienced a rapid rise from the winter of 2017, reached a peak in March 2018, and was the biggest gaming topic in the world at the time. In 2018 and for a few months into 2019, there was a real “Fortnite mania”: the online shooter was everywhere: in kids’ rooms, on Twitch, on TV.
- At the same time as Fortnite, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins became a star on Twitch. The notorious trashtalker and overambitious flamer refrained from cursing, donned a hair band, downed Red Bull after Red Bull, and streamed Fortnite like a maniac.
- Ninja reached new heights, was the first with more than 10 million followers on Twitch, was invited on big talk shows, nurtured plans to build a huge brand around his persona – he wanted to be like David Beckham.
Even then, Ninja said how much he profited from Fortnite: for example, he earned crazy amounts of money via the “creator code.” But from his point of view, it could have been even more in 2018 if the developers behind Fortnite, Epic Games, had only supported him properly.

What was Ninja’s problem with Fortnite? Even at Fortnite’s wedding, Ninja was caustic about not getting “the love” he was supposed to get.
So he grumbled for months in 2018 and 2019 that he should actually get his “own skin” in Fortnite. Thereby resonated: One should then also share him in the sales revenue. For months, Ninja jealously eyed every reference in Fortnite to other content creators.
It seemed like Ninja thought Epic was making a mistake not putting him at the center of everything they were doing “to get richer.” In the end, Ninja got his “own skin” in January 2020 – but in his opinion it came too late, because the big hype was already over.

Ninja says he’s “more sad than angry”
This is what Ninja is complaining about now: In 2022, Twitch streamer Ninja isn’t as big a deal as he used to be. A viewer now asked him when his skin will be back in Fortnite’s item store.
But Ninja seemed at a loss. He said that the skin was supposed to return to the item store on April 11, but that was postponed at short notice:
I feel like Epic hates me right now, seriously. I feel like I’m getting the short end of the stick.

So Ninja is annoyed that streamers Ludwig and Loserfruit both get events in Fortnite that are sponsored by Epic. However, he had not received an offer to do the same.
Maybe Epic would try to promote other content creators, not just him. But he and his team had been promoting the return of the skin for a month, and now it’s just been postponed.
That makes him more “sad than angry,” he says.
That’s what’s behind it: It has been a pattern with Ninja for years to see that he is extremely ambitious and basically complained why he wasn’t being pushed up even further, even when he was already at the top.
From his point of view, Epic was following a wrong approach here, betting on multiple horses and not just favoring him.
From the outside, it looks like Epic doesn’t want to clearly single out anyone as a “super draft horse”, but rather bet on many faces. However, Ninja just can’t seem to get comfortable with the idea, even after 5 years.
