Farewell to Exotic Specs in WotLK

WoW: These exotic specs we will not see in WotLK Classic

At September 26, 2022 could bring us the launch of WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Classic awaits us. And what is the author of these lines looking forward to the most? To Northrend? Nope, you can still quest there in retail WoW. The raid instances? Nope. Naxxramas was only an issue in WoW Classic, the Eye of Eternity will be annoying after the second visit and the Obsidian Sanctum is just a nice quickie. But what is it then? I’ll tell you! The class design of the WotLK era. With the expanded talent trees and all the useful additions that on the already good base of the TBC era.

There is, however, a hair in the retro soup. WotLK Classic will, as we all know, rely on patch 3.3.5 for class balancing and design. While this means that we can expect the best balanced version of the Northrend , it also means that we will miss out on some exotic playstyles that were popular in Northrend back in the day. In this special, I’ll look back at some of those notable specs.

The Rogue – Honor Among Thieves

The first playstyle that comes to mind as an old veteran rogue is based on the talent Honor among thieves. The talent was initially bugged in WotLK. As soon as you put more than one rogue in the group, all rogues in the group immediately got as many combo points as there were rogues in the group on every critical hit by an ability. So if you had four or five rogues in the party, they could almost consistently knock out 5-point finishers like eviscerate. Bam! Thanks to several nerfs, the HaT rogue will unfortunately be unplayable in WotLK Classic PvE.

Well, at first the area attack was actually pretty weak – mainly due to the high cooldown. Blizzard reacted and removed the cooldown (as well as other little things). What the developers hadn’t taken into account: The version of the Throw Specialization also provided dagger fans with a chance to disrupt the target for three seconds. So suddenly rogues had a spamable area attack that they could use to deal decent damage, apply poisons, and prevent and even silence hit targets from casting spells. All opponents were of course … enthusiastic “cough”.

Despite adjustments to the Avoidance values, there were rogues throughout WotLK that could successfully tank raid bosses.Despite adjustments to the Avoidance values, there have been rogues throughout WotLK that have been able to successfully tank raid bosses.

Holy Prot Paladin – this is imba!

What happens when you give a paladin tank, who has his gear, jewels, and the like all on stamina, a talent that makes stamina incidentally increase the record pope’s spell power and critical heals? That’s exactly what the talent did for a while back then Touched by Light. Specifically, 30 percent of stamina was converted to spell power, and critical heals were also increased by a value equal to 30 percent of the paladin’s stamina.

The result was a tank that was almost indestructible in PvP, that could easily heal severely damaged teammates with its small (!) heals, and that also relied on tools such as Aura Mastery or Tireless defender could fall back on. By the way, when Touched by Light was adapted, the Prot Paladin was still an issue in PvP, just with a mix of Protection and Retribution talents – the Paladin will still be a force in WotLK Classic.

WoW: WarlockWarlocks could definitely tank bosses with their void shifter in WotLK.

Warlock tanks are known to play a prominent role in select boss fights of the TBC era. Likewise, there were situations in WotLK where raid groups resorted to taking advantage of the demon summoner. However, this did not involve the new Metamorphosis in the focus of the tank job, but the old familiar bluesuit, now and then also Leerwandler called.

The Voidwalker’s advantage: like all pets, it takes very little damage from area-of-effect attacks. Unlike other pets, warlocks could also significantly improve the tanking demon through talents in terms of stamina, healing received, or threat generation. Guilds took advantage of all this in the Obsidian Sanctum, for example, to fight Sartharion and his Twilight Dragons simultaneously without tanks constantly dying from area-of-effect damage. Based on the Experiences from the Beta, this will be implemented in WotLK Classic. will probably not be necessary.

Death Knight was a force throughout the WotLK era despite numerous nerfs. The Death Knight was a force throughout the WotLK era despite numerous nerfs.

The death knight is known to be the first hero class of WoW (buy now ). Why Hero Class? Well, because you don’t have to level it from level 1, but you can start your hero at level 55. And if you look at how strong the Death Knight was at its premiere, then it should obviously also stand out from the “normal” classes by its strength. This is especially clear from the fact that, despite numerous debuffs, he is in patch 3.3.5 he is still one of the strongest damage experts and tanks. belongs. How strong must he have been in the beta or at the launch of WotLK?

What stands out when you look at old descriptions of Death Knight specializations: Blizzard quickly moved to avoid terms like tank, damage, or PvP. Instead, they emphasized the merits of the DK specs: Blood focuses on weapons, armor, and physical strikes, Frost focuses on control, counters, and combos, and Unholy builds on spells, summons, and plagues. Tanking and dealing damage? They could all do that at launch, but with different focuses!

Clearly, such killer machines also left their footprint in PvP. In various PvP – Season s (i.e., even after various mitigations), there were reports of Death Knight Arena Gladiators wearing blue gear and using macros that triggered spells randomly. That’s why I’m not going to introduce you to an exotic death knight skill here… the death knight itself was “op” in a unique way for long periods in WotLK.

Besides these outliers, which probably won’t play a role in WotLK Classic, there were some notable playstyles back then that might actually be an issue in the Northrend re-release (based on the private server experience, for instance). The Spellhance Shaman, for example, or the “Furor Tank” with a titanium-handled two-handed sword and shield. What playstyle are you most looking forward to when you think about WotLK Classic?
