Of the four classic anti-terror units from Counter-Strike (GIGN, GSG 9, SAS and SEAL Team 6), GSG 9, founded in 1972, is the third oldest of the real organizations. Along with France’s GIGN, the GSG 9 was the most widely used in the entire Counter-Strike series to promote the games. Ironically, the GSG 9 in Global Offensive so far only appears on the three official maps Baggage, Monastery and Overpass. In the Global Offensive trailer, the Phoenix Connexion and the GSG 9 can be seen on Nuke, a map clearly set in Germany in Global Offensive and the trailer itself. In the game itself, Balkans and the Special Air Service compete against each other.
The GSG 9 has sayings in the Global Offensive files that refer to the hostages of the hostage scenario. Valve may be planning to release corresponding cards. In the Global Offensive beta, the GSG 9 was the third playable model and was still playable on the Office and Train maps until August 10, 2012.
