As a kind of constant, it now links 3 main titles of the popular shooter series together and still lures masses of players into the action-packed, intense battles. But it looks like Activision also wants to breathe fresh life into its flagship project in the foreseeable future – and not just with new – Season s or regular fresh content. Warzone 2: Everything known so far – leaks, rumors, release date, platforms

Where does the info on Warzone 2 come from? The first information about Warzone 2 comes from the renowned gaming journalist Jason Schreier and from the well-known leaker and industry insider Tom Henderson, who confirmed Schreier’s report and also added some more details about Warzone 2.

Schreier recently reported on how the “Call of Duty” series will continue on the PlayStation in the foreseeable future after the gigantic Microsoft-Activision deal became known. The name “Warzone 2” was mentioned for the first time.

How reliable is this info? Both sources, i.e. Schreier and Henderson, are considered very reliable and are not exactly known for spreading wild rumors or making baseless claims. In short: What they both say is basically always true. So the information is almost certainly correct. Nevertheless, as always: Until the whole thing has been officially confirmed, treat the information with the necessary amount of caution.

What is Warzone 2 anyway? Warzone is a first person multiplayer online shooter and Call of Duty’s in-house Battle Royale at the same time. The game is free-to-play and acts as a tie-in for annual main releases of the CoD series. By the way, the new Battle Royale does not necessarily have to be called “Warzone 2” in the end, but that is apparently what it is currently being called in internal circles.

According to Henderson, Warzone 2 is intended to be a full-fledged successor to Warzone and not just embody a simple update or upgrade. It’s intended to be a completely new CoD title for better hardware. Henderson also refers to this as a “clean slate” – basically a reboot of sorts. Previous weapons, operators, etc. from the current Warzone are not to be carried over. There should be a new map. Possibly Modern Warfare II, which is speculated to be released in the last quarter of 2022, could serve as a basis (for setting, weapons, map, etc.). Unfortunately, there were no details about the gameplay yet.

When is the Warzone 2 release? Schreier assumes a release in 2023. When exactly – but he did not give any more concrete information. Henderson is also on the same track (2023), but he also says that it could possibly be the end of 2022.

For example, he says he heard a few weeks ago that a new Warzone map from Infinity Ward is set for that time frame, dubbed “clean slate.” That would fit with a new start of Warzone coupled with the release of Modern Warfare 2, but could have been delayed to 2023 if the map including “clean slate” from Infinity Ward is the Warzone 2 revealed by Schreier.

Conceivable here would be a potential launch in the spring of 2023 shortly after the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (CoD 2022) – so to the 3rd birthday of Warzone and similar to how it has been with Modern Warfare 2019 and Warzone.

For which platforms will Warzone 2 be released? According to Henderson, Warzone 2 will be a game for better hardware, which means that it will only be released for the current-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X as well as for the PC. Players on PlayStation and Xbox will only be able to enjoy the significantly improved graphics if they get their hands on one of the coveted consoles.

Recently, Henderson has learned that Warzone 2 is apparently being considered for release on the last-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft (PS4, Xbox One) – but only if Warzone 2 does not perform well financially on the current generation of consoles. Henderson speculates that there will be no cross-play between the different console generations in this case.

Warzone 2 is coming – What will happen to Warzone 1?

This is a question many a gamer might ask themselves in light of the latest leaks and rumors – especially if you’ve already invested a lot of money in Warzone (- Season Passes, cosmetics, etc). After all, there is talk of a completely new start. Tom Henderson has already commented on this as well.

This is how Henderson sees the future of Warzone: In short, according to Henderson, Warzone will likely remain available, but Warzone 2 is coming anyway and separately.

As already mentioned, the name “Warzone 2” is not necessarily final. The sequel could simply continue under the name “Warzone” on current-gen consoles and PC, and Warzone as we currently know it could continue as “Warzone: Legacy” on the previous platforms. Henderson assumes that both Battle Royale games based around Call of Duty will (continue to) run in parallel.
