Epic Chief’s Warning on Fortnite NFTs

What do you think of when you read “ Token”? Tokens, tokens … surely these aren’t , i.e. Non-Fungible Tokens?! Does now want to add a crypto layer to the hit Fortnite? Well, this hint of officialism is certainly intentional. However, this is actually a cryptocurrency project by Fortnite fans. Stupidly, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney doesn’t find it funny at all that the trademarked name Fortnite is being used in this way. His warnings:

NFTs a NoGo in the Epic Games Store?

The shot across the bow had an effect. The Twitter channel and the Fortnite Token website are now offline. But that doesn’t mean that Tim Sweeney is fundamentally against , blockchain or NFTs (you only understand station? Here you go to the explaining bear special). Has. The Epic boss already made that clear last year.

After Steam had specially adjusted the Steamworks documentation, to exclude programs that rely on cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology, and NFTs, Sweeney stated that the Epic Games Store will not be putting a stick in the legs of these games. And in the meantime, there is even a blockchain game preparing for release on the Epic Games Store: the world’s first Web3 battle royale, Grit.

A game the world doesn’t need

As a report from Kotaku points out, it has actually only been certain for a short time that Grit will go the crypto route. This was announced in the course of the Galaverse Convention by Gala Games on June 6, 2022. Gala Games is not the developer of the game at all, but since February a partner of the responsible studio Team Grit. During this time, there also seems to have been a switch to a crypto system. Steam hasn’t noticed anything yet. Grit’s product page has not been updated since January 25, and there is no mention of NFTs anywhere.

Grit still takes place in a Wild West setting, and it’s still about shooting other players with guns into the eternal hunting grounds. What is new, however, is that you ride NFT horses, which were apparently taken directly from the marketplace for the Unreal Engine.

Really makes a lot of sense to buy a retort asset as a “unique NFT”. Hopefully no one falls for it just because it says “Epic” on the horse and there are supposed to be only 500 versions of the mount in the game. When asked, those responsible claimed that this was an oversight (the horse was just a placeholder that had been forgotten to be replaced). But show various posts by Liz Edwards (Senior Character Artist for ) that there are more of these “oversights”. The also smells like a scam and you’d better keep your hands off this game.
