Sarina Wiegman wins UEFA Women’s Coach Award

Sarina Wiegman has been named Women’s Coach of the Year 2021/22.

Wiegman, who led England to victory at UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, beat Lyon’s Sonia Bompastor and Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklemberg in the vote. The decision was announced during the UEFA Champions League 2022/23 group stage draw in Istanbul.

In a video message, Wiegman said, “It’s really nice to receive this great award, I feel very honored and humbled. I want to congratulate Sonia and Martina for their nominations and their great achievements with their teams.”

“This award is really for everyone involved with the English team, the federation, the staff and of course especially the players. I thank them very much.”

“Since I started with the team in September, things have gone really well. We’ve really enjoyed it and played at the highest level. Our fans have been great as well. Thank you to all the fans who have been so supportive.”

“Now we are looking forward again. Hopefully we’ll qualify for the World Cup and then we’ll go to the World Cup next year and try to improve, perform and of course enjoy the game.”

Why did Wiegman win the prize?

Women’s EURO 2022: The 10 best goals

Wiegman, who triumphed with her native Netherlands at UEFA Women’s EURO 2017, took over England a year ago. In an incredible – Season in which they went unbeaten, the Lionesses scored more than 100 goals. Wiegman’s highlight was once again leading a Women’s EURO host to the title when they won their first major title against Germany in July.

Along the way, England triumphed with a tournament-record 22 goals, conceded only two and won all their matches in a thrilling style that was followed by a record crowd. Wiegman was able to field the same eleven in every game. England are also on the verge of qualifying for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where Wiegman’s side are among the favorites.

What is the UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year award?

For this award, the performances of coaches* in Europe throughout the – Season in league, European Cup and national team were evaluated, regardless of their nationality. Lyon’s Jean-Luc Vasseur was the first winner in 2019/20, followed by Barcelona’s Lluís Cortés in 2020/21.

How were the coaches selected?

An initial shortlist of five coaches was compiled by UEFA’s technical study group.

The top three nominees were chosen by a jury composed as follows:

– The coaches of the 16 clubs that took part in the group stage of the 2021/22 UEFA Women’s Champions League.
– The coaches of the 16 nations that took part in UEFA Women’s EURO 2022
– A group of journalists selected by European Sports Media (ESM)

The judges chose their top three coaches, with the first receiving five points, the second three and the third one. The coaches were not allowed to vote for themselves.
