Embracer Group now owns Lord of the Rings!

Shortly before gamescom 2022, those responsible for the Embracer Group (THQ Nordic, Plaion (formerly Koch Media)) announce a mega acquisition involving eight (!) different companies. Among them: Middle-earth Enterprises and the important licenses around the “Lord of the Rings” universe.

Today, August 18, 2022, it was worth visiting the Embracer Group press site. Within a very short time, nine press releases went online there in the morning. And anyone who has been following the Swedish media group since 2019 will surely have guessed what was going on: a lot of money was put into acquiring several companies at once. Eight, to be exact. In contrast, the Triple coup from December 2021 or the latest Acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montreal and Eidos Montreal in May 2022. almost like a warm up.

What happened?

We have rummaged through the various press releases and summarize for you below the most important facts about the new acquisitions of the Embracer Group.

  • With Middle-earth Enterprises the Embracer Group was able to acquire a division of the Saul Zaentz Company, which owns an extensive catalog of intellectual property and the worldwide rights to motion pictures, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks and stage productions related to the fantasy literary works “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien. In addition, there are the corresponding rights to other literary works relating to Middle-earth authorized by the “Tolkien Estate” and “HarperCollins”.
  • Among the most important upcoming works set in Middle-earth and to which Middle-earth Enterprises financially involved, include the Amazon series “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of ,” the animated film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” (Warner Bros), scheduled for release in 2024, and the mobile game “The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth” from .
  • Featured at Tuxedo Labs the Swedish studio behind Teardown could be taken over completely.
  • With Tripwire Interactive a US developer and publisher known for games such as Maneater, Rising Storm and Killing Floor, was acquired in its entirety.
  • One could take over the company Singtrix take over Singtrix, based in Los Angeles, is an award-winning manufacturer of industry-leading vocal processing effects technology for karaoke, gaming and entertainment.
  • Embracer Group now includes publisher Limited Run Games, which has distributed more than 1,000 digital and physical games to date.
  • The company also now includes Bitwave Games, a Swedish studio focused on retro game development and publishing.
  • The companies Gioteck (“one of the leading European brands for gaming accessories”) and Tatsujin (Embracer’s first studio in Japan to have access to the rights to the Toaplan catalog thanks to another deal) complete the mega acquisition.
  • In total, Embracer Group has spent on the acquisitions approx. US$770 million in hand.

Freemode and financial report

In parallel, Embracer Group executives announced the formation of Embracer Freemode (“Freemode”), an operating group comprised of certain gaming and entertainment companies owned by Embracer (source). The newly formed operating group focuses on six broad and diverse market segments, including: Retro/Classic/Heritage Gaming & Entertainment, Game Development & Production, Devices, Gear & Collectables, Community & E-Commerce, New Idea & Technology Incubation and Production Services.

Also released was the financial report for April through June 2022, with net revenue up 107 percent, with mobile making the biggest jump (up 104 percent). Things look less good in terms of revenue, which in fact fell by 21 percent.

For the fiscal year 22/23, those responsible expect organic growth of 20 to 35 percent. The fourth quarter of the year is to be carried thereby also by the release of a AAA play, which was not announced so far. A total of 25 AAA games are currently said to be in development.
