EA claims Lootboxes in FIFA 22 are loved by fans. Besides, only the wengest Lootboxes would actually be bought by people anyway and the whole thing is just a fun “surprise mechanic”. That’s why FIFA 23 again offers the controversial possibility to spend a lot of real money. This is despite the fact that Lootboxes are considered a simple gambling mechanic in many countries and are even banned in some cases.
EA claims FIFA fans love Lootboxes and that’s why they remain
FIFA 23 casts its long shadow ahead and should ideally soon flush billions into the coffers of the publisher Electronic Arts again. At least, if EA has its way, and that works easiest with the tried and tested Lootboxes.
Lootboxes return accordingly in the latest part of the game. of the soccer game series And are now defended by the publisher. Supposedly, fans would love the mechanics, even though they are so controversial.
However, there are some other big changes in FIFA Ultimate Team and you can see what they are here:
FIFA 23 – This changes in FIFA Ultimate Team
In an interview with Eurogamer, the people behind FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) and the associated FUT Packs aka Lootboxes explain why nothing will change in this part. They have been such an important part of the game for so long, are very popular with players and it is only fair that fans can spend money on them.
“We believe wholeheartedly that Ultimate Team and FUT Packs, which have been part of the game for over a decade, are a part of FIFA that players* love. Fans love that the game reflects the excitement of the real world and the strategies involved in building and managing a squad. Giving players the choice to spend money if they want is fair.”
In defense EA also mentions some other points. Paying with real money is optional and the packs can also be earned. Supposedly, no one would be encouraged to buy packs rather than earn them. They always work the same, regardless of whether they were purchased. It is said that only very few people actually spend money on the packs anyway, and most of them are not bought, but earned.
With FIFA 22, that would have been the case with 9 out of 10 lootboxes. Nevertheless, through the mode in 2020. 1.62 billion US dollars in sales made (not only in FIFA Ultimate Team, though, but also through Madden and NFL, both of which also have an Ultimate Team mode). Since 2021, however, the figures are no longer openly communicated at all (via: Twitter).
About the accusations
However, nothing is said about the accusations that FUT packs are simply gambling with real money. In countries like Belgium, Lootboxes are officially recognized as gambling and are therefore completely banned. Accordingly, they had to be completely removed from the game by EA, and there are similar efforts in Norway, the Netherlands and many other countries.
We can only point out that you should be extremely careful with such mechanics if you are prone to gambling or quickly fall prey to other addictions. If you have any difficulties in this regard, you can, for example, contact the free advice hotline of the BZgA (Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung) on the subject.
