The video game world reacts to the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in their own way. Numerous developer studios in Ukraine officially opposed the invasion and condemned the acts of war, the Russian government. While GSC Game World calls for financial support for the Ukrainian army donates 11 bit Game revenue This War of Mine to the Ukrainian Red Cross. Electronic Arts is joining the protest against Russia and has announced it will remove Russian teams from the latest versions of the popular sports games #FIFA and #NHL22 remove.
EA removes Russian and Belarusian teams
Electronic Arts launches a Act of solidarity and, like many other organizations at the moment, denounces the recent military actions against Ukraine. After the sports organizations FIFA, #UEFA and #IIHF, have banned Russian national teams and clubs, EA will also remove these teams from its games in the coming days and weeks. The studio announced this in two tweets. In the statement from EA SPORTS FIFA it says:
“In accordance with our partners at FIFA and UEFA, EA Sports has initiated processes to remove the Russian national team and all Russian clubs from EA Sports FIFA products: FIFA 22 (buy now 19,90 € ), FIFA Mobile and FIFA Online. We are also actively evaluating appropriate changes in other areas of our games.”
EA’s field hockey brand is also taking a similar course. On their Twitter account, the EA Sports NHL account announced that in the coming weeks not only the Russian teams from NHL 22 will be removed, but also the Belarusian ones. The statement on this is as follows:
“After the IIHF excluded all Russian and Belarusian national and club teams from IIHF competitions, we will remove these teams from NHL 22 in the coming weeks.”
Fans are against these measures
It is becoming clear that fans are not particularly enthusiastic about this action. On Twitter, many complain about EA’s announcement and accuse the studio of blind actionism. Additionally, some also ask why other countries have not been sanctioned to such a degree in the past. Some critics also claim that this decision will not solve the war in Ukraine. The Twitter user “Seamus_Malek” writes on this topic for example:
“Someone needs to explain to me how this supports the Ukrainian resistance. It’s a video game. They are not real.”

EA’s statement continues to say: “EA Sports stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and, like so many voices in the world of soccer, calls for peace and an end to the invasion of Ukraine.”. The NHL account makes similar comments. The removal of teams is expected to begin in the coming weeks. EA has stated that it will provide additional updates on the matter as they become available.
