EA changes in FIFA 22 the mistake that center backs – because of tempo disadvantages – were absolutely unplayable in FIFA 21. Fast outfield defenders should no longer dominate the center of defense in the future.
This is really crass news for every FIFA Ultimate Team fan. The meta in FIFA 22 will change. We already know that. In the latest pitch notes EA announces that we will play with central defenders again in the upcoming part.
Since speed will still be the most important factor for good players, the question remains: how will it look like, EA? We’ll tell you.
FIFA 22: New meta for central defenders
“Placing any player who is not a central defender in a central defender position will have a negative effect on their defensive positional play.”
That’s what EA tells us in the FIFA 22 gameplay pitch notes. Ok, so what does that mean exactly?
Quite simply: positional play will become more important. Meaning: in the future, if you put a fast player – that doesn’t have to be a full-back, we’ve also played with Mbappé in central defense – in the center-back position, he’ll simply stand badly.
Leak: FIFA 23 will be free-to-play!
We assume that “non-IVs” will then pick up the offside on counters without defending sensibly. Or not cover the opponent properly at standards and lose every header duel.
With the community and also with us, this change is very well received. After all, the current meta is simply unrealistic, I repeat: Mbappé as a horny IV. But there are more fixes that affect the defense.
Defensive changes in FIFA 22 – new defending
Further, EA describes the innovations as follows: “Your defenders can act more as a unit with the new tactical AI, maintain formation shape as they move across the pitch, cover open spaces, mark each defensive zone appropriately, and add more authenticity to their overall defensive shape.”
This probably concerns next-gen players the most. The Hypermotion feature will only be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. We don’t yet know what defending will look like without Hypermotion.

Another extremely significant point is the stamina. Because in FIFA 22 a team stamina will be added. If you call your second defender to help, he will only sprint actively to the opponent with the ball for a few seconds and then return to his position. So this R1/RB move has to be used much more precise.
We are curious to see how this will all work after release. It wouldn’t be the first time that you hear about big changes and then it feels completely different in the final gameplay. Or there are even patches that undo such innovations and bring us back to “the main thing is fast central defenders”. The new defending sounds sensible, though.

FIFA 23 RELEASE – WHAT IS KNOWN SO FAR
FIFA 22 is still in full operation, but in the background the game makers of EA Sports are already working on the next part – FIFA 23 will be released in autumn 2022.
But under which name will the classic game be continued in autumn 2022? As things stand, it is not at all certain that the game will continue to bear the name of the world association FIFA. We have the most important information about FIFA 23 for you, why the game series will get a new name and on which consoles the next part of the soccer simulation will be available.
WHEN WILL FIFA 23 BE RELEASED?
We can’t give you an official launch date for the next part of the FIFA game series yet. EA hasn’t communicated much in this regard yet, so so far we can only assume that FIFA 23 will be released in the period between mid-September and early October 2022, just like its predecessors. In the past years, the latest launch date of a FIFA game was October 06.
